Celebrini dazzles at the WJCs

When Jay Pandolfo is asked by the media about Macklin Celebrini, he usually replies that the freshman center, who is projected to go #1 in the next draft, is "as advertised." In other words he delivers on those lofty expectations. Two days into the World Junior Championships in Sweden, been "as advertised" on the international stage.

Following a five point performance (G,4A) in Canada's blowout win against Latvia, Celebrini is the tournament's top scorer with a 2-4-6 line. The final score was 10-0 and Celebrini, the youngest player in the tournament, had a hand in four of the first five goals to earn player of the game honors.

The Athletic raved:

If there has been one constant in Canada’s lineup, other than its fourth line, throughout selection camp, pre-tournament, and the first two games of the tournament, it has been how noticeable Celebrini is. You can’t help but follow him out there and he can’t help but find the puck and do something with it.

His skating through neutral ice and his ability drive through the middle are both unique on this team. When he has the puck, he doesn’t look like a 17-year-old who won’t turn 18 until the summer — he looks confident and aggressive, like he wants to take rather than given. He finds open ice off of the puck and sees open ice with it. His tight skating on turns has made him hard to track and get a hold of in the offensive zone.
