Captain's Q&A; Dog Pound's "Hockey 101" event tonight; 31 at NHL camps; Hutson & Celebrini updates

2024-25 Terriers will be led by co-captains Ryan Greene and Shane Lachance. Greene, a junior from Paradise, Newfoundland who had 36 points last season, shared his thoughts on the upcoming campaign in our annual captain's Q&A.

Q—In your two seasons at BU, you’ve experienced the leadership style of Dom Fensore and Case McCarthy. What can your teammates expect from you as captain?

A— Having Dom and Case as guys to look up to coming in here at a younger age was something really beneficial for me, getting to know those guys on a deeper level. Having those guys lead you into battle all the time was something I’ll always remember and I’ll always take a lot from those guys. Going into this year, for myself, I’m just trying to lead by example. Whether that’s on the ice, off the ice, always being respectful and a good teammate and somebody that hopefully the younger guys and all the guys can lean on if they ever need anything.

Q—What went into the decision to return to BU for your junior season? Did the Blackhawks, who drafted you in the second round in 2022, ask you to turn pro?

A— It was a tough decision, but at the end of the day I love it here. There is nowhere else I’d rather be than here at BU with all my best friends. Having the opportunity to get another kick at the can and hopefully get back to another Frozen Four and maybe come out on the other side of it this time is something I’ve thought a lot about. Last year we didn’t win as much as we hoped to with the group we had, but hopefully we can change the narrative this year.

Q—You've had a few development camps with the Blackhawks. How do they differ from BU pre-season practices and what will you bring from the more recent development camp to your skills toolkit?

A— Off-ice isn’t something a lot of the teams do. It’s their own approach and something they’ve taken into their hands to try. I think it’s been awesome going to those camps. I think when it’s off-ice, it’s still competitive but it feels a little less like you’re trying to take someone’s job. You can really get to know the guys a little more and become closer with them and get that chemistry that you want with guys. Those camps have been really good for me.

Q—What elements of your game do you want to enhance this season before taking the next step?

A— I want to round out my game even more. I think I’ve been able to do that over the last two years, round out my game and be able to play in all areas of the ice. That’s something I’m going to continue to try and improve on this year and grow. On top of that, I think shooting more, having more of an attack mentality. Playing in all situations, you get to learn a lot, so I’m just excited to learn and grow my game and try to win hockey games.

Shane Lachance and Devin Kaplan joined the women's team's leadership group for a Meet & Greet event at the BU Bookstore (910 Comm Ave.) on Thursday night. Bernie Corbett interviewed both Terrier head coaches, Jay Pandolfo and Tara Watchorn for the first episode of Inside BU Hockey, which we'll post when available.

The BU Dog Pound invites both rookie and experienced Terrier fans to a triple-header at Agganis Arena today (Friday). Watch the Women's Team's exhibition game against Concordia at 3 p.m. followed by Hockey Chalk Talk in the Agganis Club Room and then a free skate.

Freshman wing Cole Eiserman, who was drafted by the Islanders in the first round of the 2024 NHL draft--20th overall--is featured on the cover of the September-October issue of New England Hockey Journal. With nine goals in last Spring's World U18 Championships, he set new NTDP career marks for goals with 127 and power play goals with 52.

In NEHJ’s feature story on Hockey East, Coach Jay Pandolfo says he is looking for his first-year players to contribute immediately.

“Our expectations are for them to be able to make an impact pretty much right away. That’s what we try to do. We try to identify guys that are ready to play college hockey. We don’t want them coming in and having to swim upstream the whole time. We want to be in a place where they can come in and have an impact."

College Puck NXT's ranking of Hockey East newcomer classes (freshmen & transfers) has the Terriers third behind BC and Providence, and followed by Northeastern, UConn and Maine.

Looking ahead
2025 recruit Jonathan Morello set up Dubuque's tying goal late in the third period and the Fighting Saints went on to a 3-2 shootout win over Sioux City.

2025 or 2026 recruit Jay Feldberg had a goal and an assist in the Jr. Canadians' 3-2 win over Lindsay. A right-shot center, Feldberg has four points in his first five games.

2026 recruit Simon Wang scored a power-play goal as King Rebellion defeated Collingswood, 5-3, in the OJHL. A 6'6" left-shot defenseman, he has a goal and two assists in his first three games.

Here's which training camps they're at.

Also at an NHL training camp is Belle Fraser, the talented Daily Free Press reporter who covered BU Men's Hockey the past few seasons and co-starred in Bernie Corbett's post-game videos. She has a new gig as Utah Hockey Club beat reporter at the Salt Lake City Tribune and introduced herself to local fans in an ESPN interview.

The Athletic's Arpon Basu makes a strong case for Lane Hutson to begin the season in the NHL, on the Montreal Blueline.  He quotes Laval Rocket (Montreal's AHL team) coach Pascal Vincent:

“We were talking about it the other day, not only will the NHL be faster, the guys are bigger, they have more experience, but his teammates will as well. Guys will get open quicker for him and he’ll be able to see those options.

“He’s going to be a good player. He’ll adjust. Today, he took what the other team gave him. I think he has that quality to be able to adjust. I think he’ll be fine.”

The Athletic (subscription) It’s already clear the Canadiens should give Lane Hutson a chance to start in the NHL

Defenseman Cam Crotty, who last season became the 93h Terrier to play in the NHL (Lane Hutson was the 94th), has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Minnesota Wild. A member of BU’s 2018 Hockey East champions, he made his NHL debut with Arizona last Spring. Crotty is expected to begin the season with AHL Iowa.

Women’s Team

Terriers take on Concordia in a 3 p.m. exhibition game today at Agganis Arena. The women will play home games at Agganis during first semester while enhancements are being made at Walter Brown Arena.

The Terriers were picked for sixth place in the annual coaches’ poll. Defending champion UConn was the top vote getter followed by Northeastern and BC.
