UPDATED: Terriers to face Ohio State in Toledo Regional; New blueline commit for 2025-26

Terriers have entered the ‘win-or-go-home” portion of the season, the NCAA tournament, and they’ll do so as a #2 seed in the Toledo, Ohio, regional. BU will face off with #3 seed Ohio State, who took top-ranked Michigan State to double-overtime in the Big 10 title game before losing, 4-3.

The Terriers and the Buckeyes are scheduled for this Thursday with puck drop at 2 p.m. and ESPNU airing the game. The teams met in the opening round of the NCAA Regional in Manchester, an 8-3 BU win en route to the "DC Miracle" national championship in 2009.

See comments from Coach Jay Pandolfo, Shane Lachance, and Cole Eiserman linked below.

The other half of the regional draw pits the Spartans against Cornell, who defeated Clarkson to win a second straight ECAC title. That win extends the Big Red’s season and the tenure of retiring Coach Mike Schafer.

BU faces a tremendously tough path to return to the Frozen Four for a third consecutive season. On ESPN's Selection Show, the Toledo regional was ominously dubbed "the bracket of death."  With Toledo sitting on the Ohio-Michigan border, the Huntington Center should be packed with Spartan and Buckeye fans.

Do read this spot-on analysis of Thursday’s disappointing loss to UConn from the Boston Hockey Blog’s Mitch Fink. Among other observations, he writes:
Margin for error no longer exists. The Terriers did well enough in the regular season to earn themselves the seventh overall seed, and they appear positioned to face 10th-seeded Ohio State in the first round of the Toledo Regional on Thursday.

By the way, BU has played this season, it won’t matter who they take on. If the Terriers play with an attention to the little things, they can beat any team in the field. If they lay an egg, they can lose to the worst team in the tournament.

Polls
Terriers remained at #8 in the USCHO Division 1 Weekly Poll and slipped from #7 to #8 in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live Division 1 Poll. BU is also #7 in the Pairwise Rankings.

Looking ahead

Online reports indicate that BU has received a commitment from NJ Titans right-shot defenseman Kyle Kim. The 20 years old Michigan native will come aboard next season, according to College Hockey Inc. Kim is completing his second NAHL season with the Titans and has a 3-26-29 scoring line in 45 games. He's the team's top-scoring defenseman.

The 6'2", 188 lb. blueliner played youth hockey in the Honeybaked systems before stints with the Long Island Gulls 16U AAA and BCHL Langley. Kim participated in USA Hockey's Select 16 and Select 17 tournaments.

Former Terrier All-American defenseman and ESPN broadcaster Colby Cohen is an assistant coach with the Titans

BU's 2025 recruit class now includes four defensemen with Kim joining Charlie Trethewey and Carter Amico from the NTDP and Aidan Souligny from the Langley Rivermen of the BCHL.

2025 recruit Jack Pridham’s 27th goal broke a 2-2 tie to give Kitchener a 3-2 win over Owen Sound. The 6’2” right wing also assisted on the Rangers’ first two goals and earned the game’s #1 star. Pridham, who joined Kitchener in November, has a 27-27-54 scoring line in 54 games and has scored 10 goals in his last 13 games.
2026 recruit Tynan Lawrence scored his 23rd goal as Muskegon defeated Green Bay, 6-3. The 16-year-old center has a 23-25-48 scoring line in 50 games. He ranks third in rookie scoring and second in goal-scoring for first year players.

2026 recruit Caleb Malhotra scored his sixth goal and added an assist in Chilliwack’s 8-2 win over Victoria.

2025 recruit Aidan Souligny recorded his 12th assist in 28 games for Langley in a 3-1 win over Spruce Grove. The 6’3” defenseman from Ontario was traded to the Rivermen in late November.

Looking back

Brady Tkachuk scored his 28th goal in Ottawa's 3-2 win over the Devils.

Macklin Celebrini recorded his 30th and 31st assists in the Sharks' 3-1 win against the Bruins. With 52 points, he is one behind Lane Hutson in the NHL Rookie Scoring race.

That's Will Smith and Celebrini's Beanpot bet reversing the result of an earlier BU-BC bet.

Jake Oettinger stopped 22 of 24 shots as Dallas edged Philadelphia, 3-2.
