UPDATED Game Day: Terriers close regular season at Vermont; Women face Northeastern for Hockey East title at Noon

 #10/9 Terriers close out the regular season on the road in Burlington where they take on Vermont. Puck drop is 7 p.m. for the game that will be live-streamed on ESPN+.

BU clinched third place in Hockey East on Thursday with a dominant 8-2 win over #6 Providence. The win also moved the Terriers into the #6 slot in the Pairwise Rankings.

In early January, the Terriers swept the Catamounts at Agganis Arena, 6-1, and 7-4. Vermont finished the first half at 7-8-1, but have struggled in 2025 with just four wins in their last 15 outings. Last weekend, the Cats were edged by Maine, 4-3, and lost to UConn, 4-1.

Senior Joel Maata leads the UVM offense with 27 points, followed by freshmen Colin Kessler (22) and Max Strand (21) and senior Simon Jellus (20). Sophomore goalie Axel Mangbo (9-13-0) has a 3.06 GAA and an .890 save percentage.

The Catamounts are Hockey East’s most international team with players from seven countries.

BU will look to carry the momentum from Thursday’s win into tonight’s finale and next weekend’s quarterfinals.  With a pair of power play goals in that win, BU's power play is #4 at 27%, while they're also #4 in team offense at 3.73 goals per game.

Cole Hutson, who had been named Hockey East’s Rookie of the Month for February, followed that up by receiving National Player of the Month honors from the Hockey Commissioners Association. The Beanpot MVP tallied five goals and six assists in February and currently has 36 points, most among all freshman defenseman and just one behind the defensive scoring leader, regardless of class. 

Looking ahead

2025 recruit Jack Murtagh scored his 17th goal in the NTDP U18s’ 3-1 win against Green Bay. A projected late first-round pick in the 2025 draft, Murtagh has 40 points in 39 games.

2025 recruit Jack Pridham scored his 24th goal—and ninth power-play tally—in Kitchener’s 7-4 win against Windsor. The 6’2” right wing has 47 points in 43 games.

Looking back

Clayton Keller scored his 24th goal and added an assist, but Utah dropped a 4-3 decision to Chicago in overtime.

Women's Team


#13 Terriers will seek their first Hockey East tournament title since 2015 when they take on cross-town rival Northeastern in the championship game at the Toscano Family Skating Center at UConn today. Puck drop is at Noon for the contest that can be seen on ESPN News and will live stream on ESPN+.

At stake along with the conference title is a berth in the NCAA tournament.

BU, which had been picked #6 in the pre-season Coaches Poll, finished the regular season in second place, just one point behind UConn. Northeastern was fifth.

Terriers advanced to the title game by edging BC in overtime on Lindsay Bochna’s overtime goal, while Northeastern defeated Connecticut in the other semifinal.

The teams have met four times this season with each school winning twice. The first three games all were 4-0 shutouts with NU winning twice, BU once.  Last month, the Terrier won 3-2 in overtime on an Alex Law goal.

Led by Sydney Healy (22 points), Christina Vote (20) and Bocha (19) BU has the third best scoring offense and top power play unit in Hockey East. Senior goalie Callie Shanahan (17-8-2) has a 1.80 GAA and a .924 save percentage.

Eiserman hatty powers rout of Providence; Terriers clinch 3rd place

The primary mission at hand was to lock down third place in the Hockey East standings and the #10/9 Terriers started fast and finished fast in a lopsided 8-2 Senior Night win over Providence. BU scored four times in the first period and never looked back.

Freshmen accounted with six of the goals with Cole Eiserman notching his second hat trick, while Brandon Svoboda connected twice and Cole Hutson once. 

Ryan Greene and Jack Hughes had the other tallies. Quinn Hutson set a career mark with four assists. Mikhail Yegorov kept the Friars off the board until five minutes into the third period and finished with 34 saves in 54 minutes.

"The focus was to make sure we just come out and have a good start," said Coach Jay Pandolfo. "We got rewarded with a couple of power plays and took advantage. We were ready to play tonight and that was the most important thing. If we’re ready to play…a certain way and a certain style…we’re going to be in every game. I thought we had that mindset tonight."

With one regular-season game (@Vermont Saturday) before the Hockey East quarterfinals on March 15, he added, “We need to keep our foot on the gas. We know what we’re capable of doing.”

The other mission was to win the season series with PC and claim the head-to-head comparison for Pairwise purposes. With the win, BU leapfroged the Friars into the #6 spot. 

A Providence penalty just 27 seconds into the game gave BU's fourth-in-the-nation power play its first opportunity and they quickly converted. Cole Hutson took a pass from Quinn, did a high roll and, from the left circle, rifled a pass to Eiserman who had slid to the bottom of the right circle. Providence goalie Zachary Borgiel had no chance on the one-timer. The goal was Eiserman's 17th.  

A second power play at 5:07 produced a second man-advantage goal. Quinn's shot from the right circle was blocked in front, but Shane Lachance pushed the rebound to Cole Hutson in the left circle. The National Rookie of the Month wristed it over Borgiel's shoulder for his 11th of the season.

Less than a minute later, BU made it 3-0 on Jack Hughes' fourth of the season. Taking a pass from Gavin McCarthy, he wheeled into the right corner, then powered his way to the front of the cage and jammed the puck home. Cole Hutson had the second assist. 

The Terriers' fourth tally--at 8:53--was triggered by Aiden Celebrini's break-up of a Friars' entry attempt. The puck slid to the neutral zone where Quinn Hutson quickly head-manned a pass to Svoboda behind the defense. The San Jose draft pick closed to the crease and beat Borgiel five-hole for his sixth goal of the season. At that point, BU had rung up four goals on its first six shots.

Another Providence penalty, late in the opening period carried over to the second. BU didn't score on the power play, but did so seven seconds afterward, during what Bernie Corbett calls the "power play hangover." Quinn Hutson passed to Greene who skated to the left circle and briefly held the puck--as well as the attention of three defenders. His cross-ice pass found Eiserman in his "office" for another one-timer and his 18th goal.

Midway through the period, Celebrini weaved his way from the BU end deep into the PC zone. He zipped a pass to Greene in the high slot for yet another one-timer past the beleaguered Borgiel. It was Greene's 13th and a new career-high.

Despite being outshot 18-5 in the middle period, BU led 6-0. That shot count is deceiving as very few Friars' shots were good scoring chances and even fewer were grade A.

Providence broke the shutout early in the third. Celebrini blocked an initial shot, but was unable to clear  the puck and Hudson Malinowski backhanded it over Yegorov's shoulder on the glove side.

Terriers responded with a goal on the rush following a Yegorov save. Matt Copponi led an odd-man rush into the offensive zone and then dished to Eiserman who completed the hat trick with his 19th goal. Sascha Boumedienne had the second assist.

At 14:45 Nick Roukounakis skated past a defender, cut to the net and unselfishly slid the puck to a wide-open Svoboda for his seventh goal and second two-goal game.

Extra points

The win was BU's 120th out of 200 games against the Friars.

Grad student Billy Girard IV relieved Yegorov and stopped four of the five shots he faced.  

With two points tonight, Greene has 97 for his career, three shy of joining the 100-point club. 

BU's last eight-goal output was an 8-2 win at Notre Dame on Oct. 21, 2023.

Quinn and Cole Hutson are now the team's assists co-leaders with 25 each. 

In six starts against top-10 teams.Yegorov has posted a 1.61 goals-against average and a .950 save percentage.

Senior night ceremonies prior to the game brought the players and managers along with their families to center ice. Greene, a junior who is graduating in just three years, joined the seniors and grad students for the recognition. 

Looking back

Macklin Celebrini scored his 20th goal in San Jose's 7-2 loss to Colorado.  

Jake Oettinger stopped 26 of 28 shots as the Stars edged the Flames in overtime, 3-2. One that didn't stop was Joel Farabee's 10th goal for Calgary.

Lane Hutson recorded his 45th assist in Montreal's 3-2 loss to Edmonton. He remains the rookie scoring leader with 49 points, three ahead of Celebrini.

#10/9 Terriers host #6 Providence in the final regular-season game at Agganis Arena. The Senior Night contest begins at 7 p.m. and will be live-streamed on ESPN+.

At stake are three critical points as BU seeks to lock down the #3 seed in the upcoming Hockey East tournament. Either a win or an overtime win will clinch third place. In addition, after the teams split a home-and-home series last month, the victor tonight wins the head-to-head comparison in the Pairwise Rankings where BU (18-12-2) is #7 and the Friars (20-8-5) are #6.

Each team won on home ice last month with PC winning 6-3 on Friday, following by  3-0 BU shutout on Saturday. Tonight’s game will be the 200th in the series with the Terriers holding a 119-60-20 advantage.

Providence is 5-2-1 in its last eight games with the loss to BU and one to Maine in overtime being the only blemishes. Its balanced attack features 14 skaters with at least 10 points, led by Logan Will (23), Tanner Adams (22), Hudson Malinoski (21), John Mustard (20), Gramham Gamache (18) and Nick Poisson and Will Elger each with 16. Junior Philip Svedebäck was in goal for both games last month.

The Terriers haven’t played since Feb. 25 when they took two points at then-No. 9 UConn thanks to a 2-2 tie and a shootout win.

Quinn Hutson, who has 13 points in the last 10 games, leads BU with 39 points, including new career marks in goals (18) and assists (21). He’s also the +/- leader with plus-17. Cole Hutson, who was named Hockey East Rookie of the Month for February follows him with 33 points (10g,23a). Co-captains Ryan Greene and Shane Lachance have 28 and 25 points respectively.

Coach Jay Pandolfo reported everyone is available for this game with the exception of senior Brehdan Engum who also sat out the UConn game.

Looking back

Brady Tkachuk scored his 24th goal on a perfect deflection as the Senators edged the Blackhawks, 4-3. Alex Vlasic recorded his 22nd assist for Chicago. 

Buffalo's Jordan Greenway has been signed to a two-year contract extension with an average annual value of $4 million. He'll be under contract through the 2026-27 season. Earlier in the week, The Athletic (subscription) spoke with the 6'5" left wing about the possibility of being traded.

At 28 years old, Jordan Greenway no longer worries about the NHL trade deadline.

The Buffalo Sabres winger went through a deadline trade two seasons ago when the Wild traded him to the Sabres. He doesn’t pay attention to trade rumors, even those involving his name, and doesn’t use social media. Even in the final season of his contract before becoming an unrestricted free agent, Greenway isn’t sweating the March 7 trade deadline.  

Will it be OK with Greenway if he’s still on the roster after the deadline without a new contract?

“It’s got to be,” Greenway said. “I’ve got no choice.”

“People don’t like unexpected things,” Greenway said. “It’s uncomfortable. If you go through it, it minimizes how scary or nerve-wracking it can be. Grand scheme of things, you go to another team and you’ll be best friends with all of them five days after the trade deadline. And it’s gonna be as if nothing happened.”

Lindsay Bochna's goal at 7:12 of the second overtime sent BU to a 3-2 win over BC in the Hockey East semifinal and gave the Terriers their first championship game berth since 2016. BU will meet Northeastern in the title game after NU defeated defending champion UConn, 3-1, in a battle of the Huskies.

The championship game is set for Saturday at Noon at the Toscano Family Ice Center on the UConn campus.

It took 87 minutes to produce a winner with no shortage of grade A scoring chances (see the highlights).

Terriers erased a pair of BC one-goal leads to send the game to overtime. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead on a BU turnover midway through the opening period. They nearly doubled the lead on Julia Pellerin's breakaway but Callie Shanahan came up with one of the biggest of her 38 saves.

BU connected early in the second. Clara Yuhn took a centering pass in the slot from Christina Vote and beat the Eagles' Grace Campbell. It was her 10th of the season.

BC broke the tie late in the period on Katie Pyne's tally. 

Five minutes into the third period, BU scored on the rush. Taking a pass from Luisa Welcke, Lilli Welcke put the puck on the stick of Riley Walsh at the goalmouth for a tap-in. Walsh's ninth goal pulled BU even at two apiece.

Despite 12 shots on goal in the third period, BU was unable to score a go ahead goal and the game went to overtime. The first extra period produced no winner and early in the second extra-period both Walsh and Lilli Welcke hit iron off the rush. 

Seven minutes into the second overtime, Yuhn sent Vote into the BC zone. Skating past the right circle, she cut hard to the net. BC's Campbell defended Vote's shot but the rebound sat just outside of the goal line and Bochna poked it home for her ninth goal and fourth game-winner.  She also scored the overtime game-winner in the Beanpot semifinal.

BU took the season series with the Eagles with wins in three of the four meetings.

UPDATED Rookie of the Month honors for Hutson; Pandolfo media call; Women host BC in H.E. semifinal

Freshman defenseman Cole Hutson was named Hockey East Rookie of the Month after putting up a 5-6-11 scoring line in February with points in seven of eight games. That included his game-winner in the Beanpot Championship game against BC and his highlight-reel goal against UConn that earned the #1 spot on ESPN's top plays. 

Beginning with the Dec. 11 win over UMass, in which had two goals and two assists, Hutson has generated eight goals and 15 assists in the last 16 games. Currently, he is tied for second among all NCAA rookies with 33 points. Within Hockey East, Hutson leads all defensemen in goals (10), assists (23) and points (33).

At his midweek media call, Coach Jay Pandolfo reported that Mathieu Caron, Brandon Svoboda and Alex Zetterberg, who were out for the UConn game, are available for Thursday's game against Providence. Defenseman Brehdan Engum remains out with an injury.

Commenting on the team's improved defensive zone coverage this semester, he explained, "It’s still a work in progress. It’s definitely been better in the second half. When we’re determined to defend in a certain way—that’s with all five guys—that’s when we’re at our best. You’re always looking to improve in every area. We’re trying to defend harder, trying to limit time we spend in our own end."

Reiterating the need to play direct and get pucks behind the Providence defense, Pandolfo spoke about the home-and-home series with the Friars last month:

"On Friday night we let some of their offensive guys have too much time and space. We were much better Saturday night at home against them. We stayed patient the second night. The first night we didn’t and it didn’t help us. The second night…we played the game as it came to us rather than trying to force things."

He also expressed confidence in the Terriers' special teams--so important at this stage of the season--noting that the power play has been strong all season and that the penalty kill is much improved since first semester.


►The New Jersey Devils have acquired the draft rights to Shane Lachance following a three-way deal with Boston and Edmonton. He was the Oilers' sixth round pick in the 2021 draft. Shane's father, former BU standout and NHLer Scott Lachance, is New Jersey's Head of U.S. Scouting. Shane, who has 10 goals and 15 assists in 32 games, is the first sophomore captain in program history.

 Poll Story

Following their bye week, BU remained in the #10 slot in the USCHO Division 1 Poll. BC and Maine held steady at #1 and #5 respectively while Providence improved to #6 and UConn moved up to #8.

Terriers fell from #8 to #9 in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live Division 1 Poll. They remain at #8 in John Buccigross' ranking.

BU stays at #7 in the Pairwise Rankings, one spot behind Thursday's opponent, Providence.  The Terriers and Friars split two games in February, so this game will decide who takes the head-to-head. 

Looking back

Lane Hutson assisted on a pair of goals in Montreal's 4-3 win over Buffalo, giving him 44 helpers on the season, along with four goals. He remains the rookie scoring leader with 48 points. Hutson had a pair of assists in his two games last Spring. 

Hutson also is the 3d-fastest USA-born rookie defenseman in NHL history to hit the mark, following Brian Leetch (51) & Phil Housley (60).

Brady Tkachuk's power-play goal in the final minutes of regulation brought the Senators even with the Capitals, but Washington won in a shootout, 5-4. It was the Ottawa captain's 23rd tally.  

Charlie Coyle scored his 15th goal for the Bruins, but Nashville doubled up Boston, 6-3.

Macklin Celebrini scored his 19th goal as the Sharks roughed up the Sabres, 6-2. Celebrini is tied for the rookie goal-scoring lead and is tied for second in rookie point-scoring.

Looking ahead

2025 recruit Jack Murtagh scored his 16th goal and added an assist in the NTDP U18s’ 6-5 win over Wisconsin in their final collegiate series game. Murtagh has 39 points in 38 points.

2026 recruit Jay Feldberg scored his 19th goal and added two assists as the Jr. Canadians routed N orth York,12-0. With five goals in his last seven games, the right-shot center has a 19-19-38 scoring line in 49 games.

#13 Terriers, seeking their first Hockey East tournament title in a decade, take on #14/15 BC in the conference semifinal Wednesday night at Walter Brown Arena. Puck drop is at 6 p.m. for the contest that will be live-streamed by ESPN+.

This contest will be the 75th meeting between the teams with BC holding a 39-27-8 edge. 


BU and BC last met on January 31, with the Terriers edging the Eagles at WBA, 3-2, with Riley Walsh providing the game-winner--as she did in Saturday's quarterfinal win in overtime against Vermont.

Junior Sydney Healy paces BU in both goals (14) and points (22), while Lindsay Bochna and Christina Vote each have 18 points and Walsh has 16. Anchoring the defense are grad students Tamara Giaquinto and Julia Shaunessy who each have 17 points. Senior Callie Shanahan (16-8-3) brings a 1.83 GAA and a .922 save percentage into the game.

UPDATED: Women advance with OT win to reach semifinal; Prospect evaluations; Macklin vs. Lane

Junior Riley Walsh's goal four minutes into overtime gave the #14/13 Terriers a 4-3 win against Vermont and punched BU's ticket to the Hockey East semifinals. Terriers will host Green Line rival Boston College at Walter Brown Arena on Wednesday.

BU erased three Catamount one-goal leads on tallies by Maeve Kelly, Lilli Welcke and Sydney Healy.

Terriers dominated possession time throughout the contest and outshot Vermont 48-16. But it was the visitors who scored first when Oona Havana connected off a faceoff with wrister from the left circle six minutes into the period.

BU responded quickly when Kelly's low shot from the right circle, abetted by Luisa Welcke's screen, beat goalie Sydney Correa for a 1-1 tie. 

That lasted just 53 seconds as Rose-Marie Brochu took a feed from behind the the BU net and beat Callie Shanahan with a one-timer.

In the final minute of the period, Walsh took a pass at the top of the right circle and fired a shot that Lilli Welcke rerouted home to knot the score at two apiece.

The second period was scoreless with BU killing off the game's first power play and Shanahan defending nine UVM shots. 

Vermont took the lead on its second man-advantage at 4:37 of the third when Maddy Skelton poked a rebound into a wide-open net.  

Then midway through the period, BU pulled even for a third time when Kelly's waist-high shot from center point was deflected down and past Correa on the glove side by Healy. It was goal #14 for BU's leading scorer. 

BU had a late power play chance to take the lead but failed to convert.

On the game-winning sequence in overtime, Alex Law won an O-zone draw and Maggie Hanzel threw the puck toward the net. A UVM defender stopped with her skates, but fanned on a clearing attempt. Riley quickly controlled the puck fired it over Correa's glove as her teammates poured onto the ice.    

With the win, BU improves to 22-11-2.

Looking ahead
2026 recruit Yegor Shilov scored his 10th goal and then added his 11th assist in Green Bay’s 4-3 win against Youngstown.

2026 recruit Caleb Malhotra scored his fifth goal in Chilliwack’s 8-3 win against Okotoks.

2026 recruit Tynan Lawrence is one of three USHL rookies with 40 points (20-21-41) and the only one who is 16 years old.  He was Puck Preps #1 Prospect for the 2024 QMJHL draft.

Charlie Trethewey, RD, USNTDP (2025 Draft)

Following a rocky start to the season with regular turnovers off retrievals and, at times, erratic decision-making, Charlie Trethewey has gained his footing and settled into a calmer more straightforward approach.    

While it has been the simplification of his game that has improved Trethewey’s performances and gained his coaches’ trust, as Dir. of North American Scouting Mitchell Brown noted in this January 3rd scouting report, “Trethewey has a ton of potential, that much is clear. He's an explosive skater with physicality, handling ability, and a neverending motor. Defensively, he locks down off-puck threats, makes high-speed stops off the rush, and beats opponents down along the walls.”

This trend in Trethewey’s development has come at an important time for the USNTDP U18s, coinciding with a clear uptick in USHL form since December, going 7-1-1. He’s taken on bigger responsibilities with Carter Amico’s season-ending injury and has found consistency in the challenge.

The American defenceman may need a handful of years to develop into a reliable NHLer, but with continued steadiness and growing composure in his on-puck game, Trethewey’s high-end tools could flourish.


 

Looking back
Charlie Coyle’s 14th goal was the game winner in the Bruins' 3-2 win over the Penguins.

Evan Rodrigues scored his 14th goal and added an assist in Florida’s 3-0 win against Calgary. AJ Greer also recorded an assist for the Panthers.   

Brady Tkachuk scored his 22nd goal as the Senators defeated the Sharks, 5-3. Macklin Celebrini assisted on a pair of goals for San Jose.  

Lane Hutson collected his 41st and 42nd assists in Montreal’s 4-2 win against Buffalo. He remains the rookie points leader with 46, two ahead of Celebrini.

UPDATED: Terriers host Vermont in Hockey East Quaterfinals; Palm Springs tournament next season; Keller's 5-point night

 

#14/13 Terriers begin their quest for their first Hockey East tournament title since 2015 with a quarterfinal contest against Vermont at Walter Brown Arena. Puck drop is at 4 p.m. with a live stream on ESPN+.

In January, the teams split a pair of one-goal games in Burlington and one month ago, the Terriers took a 4-1 decision from the Catamounts at Walter Brown. 

Special teams have been instrumental in the Terriers success this season (21-11-2, 18-7-2 HE). BU is first in the league and 13th in the NCAA in power play goals with 19 and they lead Hockey East and are second in the NCAA in penalty killing percentage (0.908). In addition, BU is tied for the most shorthanded goals in Hockey East with four.

►On this week's edition of Inside BU Hockey, Allison DeWitt interviews head coach Tara Watchorn and junior Sydney Healey.

Captain Tamara Giaquinto was named a first-team Hockey All-Star and Sydney Healy gained third-team honors in an announcement from Hockey East.

Grad student Giaquinto, selected as the Hockey East Army ROTC defender of the year earlier in the week, set career highs in goals (8) and points (17) while blocking 47 shots.  Junior forward Healy led the Terriers with 21 points on 13 goals and eight assists.

Men's Team

A post on Twitter by a Minnesota State fan reports that BU will participate in a tournament around New Year's next season in Palm Springs along with Lowell, St. Cloud and the Mavericks. Terriers also are set for a series with Michigan State. Along with the Beanpot, that accounts for six of the 10 non-conference games on the 2025-26 schedule. 

Terriers have previously played in California twice: 1986-97-two games in San Diego with U.S. International, which briefly had a D1 program; and 1994-95 in Inglewood at the Great Western Freezeout tournament. 

Looking ahead

2025 recruit Conrad Fondrk's scored twice for the third time in four games to lead the NTDP U18s to a 6-2 win over Madison. The White Bear Lake, Minn., native has a 13-14-27 scoring line in 39 games.

2025 recruit Jack Pridham's 23rd goal brought Kitchener even with Sarnia in the third period and then he assisted on the overtime winner in the Rangers' 4-3 win. The 6'2" right wing has 46 points in 41 games.

2025 recruit Callum Hughes scored his eighth goal and added his eighth assist in Erie’s 5-4 win against Niagara.

2026 recruit Tynan Lawrence scored his 20th goal--unassisted--in Muskegon's 3-1 win against Cedar Rapids. A 5-star rated center, Lawrence has 12 goals and seven assists in his last 14 games and 41 points in 43 games overall.

2025 recruit Jonathan Morello scored his seventh goal on a power play and assisted on three other tallies in Dubuque's 8-3 win over Chicago.  The 6'2" center, a 2024 Bruins draft pick, has 22 points for the Fighting Saints.

Looking back 

Jake Oettinger stopped 29 shots in the Stars' 6-2 win over the Kings.

Clayton Keller tallied a career-high five points (one goal, four assists) and the Utah Hockey Club defeated the Minnesota Wild 6-1 on Thursday. His performance earned NHLPA Player of the Week honors. Keller is ninth in the league with 69 points and eighth in assists with 47.
