World Jr. Summer Showcase on tap; Whalers reunion set for Agganis Arena



Seven Terriers will participate in USA Hockey’s World Junior Summer Showcase, featuring candidates for this winter’s World Junior Championships in Buffalo. The event begins Friday at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan.

Five BU players are rostered on two U.S. squads: Chad Krys and Logan Cockerill are on the Blue squad, while Jake Oettinger, Patrick Harper and Brady Tkachuk are on the White squad. Dante Fabbro (photo) will skate for Canada, while Kasper Kotkansalo will be on Finland’s blueline.

NHL.com will air the final six games of the tournament on August 2, 4 & 5. HockeyTV (pay-per-view) will stream the first six games.

Oettinger is coming off a strong performance at Dallas development camp. He was a Stars’ first-round draft pick last month.

After a good showing in Red Wings development camp, Kotkansalo played for Finland in exhibition games against The Czech Republic.

BU Athletics Hall of Famer Jack O’Callahan turned 60 earlier this week. Co-captain and All-American on BU’s 1978 national championship team, he played seven NHL season with Chicago and New Jersey, after winning Olympic gold with the USA 1980 Miracle on Ice team.

Agganis Arena will host this Saturday’s reunion of the 1972-73 New England Whalers. Led by legendary BU coach Jack Kelley, who was the Whalers’ first coach and general manager, New England won the WHA’s inaugural AVCO Cup championship. 

Four Terriers skated for that team: John Danby, All-American captain of BU’s 1972 national champions; All-American Mike Hyndman; Ric Jordan; and All-American Bob Brown. In addition, two other BU All-Americans, Jack Ferreira and Richie Green were Whaler scouts. More BU connections: Statistician/Adm. Assistant Chris Henes and equipment manager Skip Cunningham.

Krys impresses at Blackhawks camp--UPDATED



Defenseman Chad Krys is opening some eyes at Blackhawks development camp this week and Coach David Quinn is expecting that to carry over into the 2016 second-round draft pick’s sophomore season  Quinn is looking for the Connecticut native to have a breakout season on the BU blueline.

“Now that he’s comfortable and knows what’s expected of him, I don’t want to put too much pressure on him but I think he can have a breakout year. He’s played a lot of hockey, and I really think he has the elite talent, the work ethic continues to improve and his conditioning really improved.”

The Boston University defenseman may have been the best player on the ice today.  I was unaware that Krys had so much offensive ability but he really showed it today.  During 3on3 rushes, he was making nice drop passes to his teammates and finding open guys for the easy goal.  He also had his own five-hole goal.  I’m very curious to see him in scrimmages Friday to see how he plays under pressure.  Regardless, his skating ability and hockey IQ were fully on display today.



Looking ahead
Three future Terriers are playing in this weekend's Junior Chowder Cup with defending champion Black Squirrels. After three games, 2020 recruit Liam Connors (photo) leads the team with five goals and six points, 2019 recruit Braden Doyle has a goal and two assists. 2020 defenseman Cade Webber also is skating for the Squirrels. Looking back
Parksandrecreation.com has ranked the top ten Hockey East freshman performances of all time with Jack Eichel and Kieran Millan earning spots in the top five. Eichel scored 71 points in 2014-15, leading BU to the NCAA championship game. In 2009, Millan posted a 29-2-3 record with a 1.94 GAA and a .921 save percentage to backstop the Terriers to their fifth national championship.


►Terrier hockey alumni will gather on Monday at Woodland Golf Club in Auburndale for the annual alums tournament. Last summer, 96 Terrier alums, along with ESPN’s John Buccigross competed in the event.


►A pair of Terrier forwards will begin their pro careers together in South Carolina with the ECHL Stingrays.  A week ago Nick Roberto signed on with South Carolina and on Thursday, former Terrier Robbie Baillargeon did the same. Baillargeon, who led BU in scoring as a freshman, played for Arizona State last year as a graduate transfer.

Assistant Coach Katie Lachapelle is leaving BU after nine seasons on Coach Brian Durocher’s staff. She’s been named the new associate head coach at Holy Cross.

Six Terriers set for World Junior Summer Showcase




Rosters have been announced for the two USA squads that will participate in next month’s World Junior Summer Showcase, a first step toward choosing the US Junior National Team that will compete in the World Junior Championships. Sophomore Chad Krys and freshmen Brady Tkachuk and Logan Cockerill are on the Blue squad, while sophomores Jake Oettinger and Patrick Harper will skate for the White squad. The tournament begins on July 29 in Plymouth, Michigan.

USA White plays defending WJC champion Finland on the first day of the event, while USA Blue faces off with the Finns the next day. Freshman Kasper Kotkansalo, a Red Wings third-round draft pick who won a gold medal in the 2016 World U18s, is on the Finnish U20 roster.

At the recently completed Senior Chowder Cup tournament, three current Terriers and a future one were among the top 16 scorers.  David Farrance (photo) led all scorers with 19 points, while Hank Crone was second with 13. Tkachuk and 2019 recruit Trevor Zegras tied for 11th with eight points.

Looking ahead
2019 (or 2020) recruit Braden Doyle, selected in the second round of the USHL draft by Dubuque, impressed at Fighting Saints summer camp.
