Former BU linemates Nick Bonino (photo-#63) and John McCarthy were opponents when the Sharks and Ducks rookies faced off in the opener of the Young Stars Tournament in Penticton, B.C. In the Sharks’ 4-1 win, Bonino had Anaheim’s only goal while McCarthy scored a power play goal for San Jose. Both Bonino and McCarthy made brief NHL debuts last season, while the third member of the Terriers' second line on the 2009 national title team, Brandon Yip, played 32 games for Colorado.
The Denver Post looks at the current pool of Avalanche prospects, including Kevin Shattenkirk and Colby Cohen, to project which will emulate the success of many first-year Avs players last season, including Yip.
Looking ahead
Youngstown began its USHL exhibition season Sunday, beating the Chicago Steele, 5-1, with BU 2011 recruit Matt O’Connor in goal. The 6-4 netminder from Toronto came up big, stopping 25 of 26 shots, many of them coming as his team was killing 11 penalties.
O’Connor appears to be in for considerable duty in the Phantom’s net as the team’s expected returning goalie from last season has now left to play NCAA hockey at Mercyhurst. The Phantoms subsequently acquired a back-up goalie. O’Connor discussed his move from Ontario to the USHL on the Phantoms’ YouTube Channel (begins at 3:30 )
Nittany Lions to join NCAA
As we reported this summer, Penn State is poised to become the 59th Division I hockey program. USCHO's Dave Starman and College Hockey News' Adam Wodon discuss the potential impact on current college hocky leagues.
