Terriers Claim 8th Hockey East Championship with 5-3 Win--UPDATED

Behind a pair of goals from tournament MVP Jack Eichel and single goals by captain Matt Grzelcyk, assistant captain Cason Hohmann and Nikolas Olsson, the #3 Terriers defeated defending Hockey East champion UMass Lowell, 5-3, to claim their eighth Hockey East Tournament Championship.

Four Terriers were named to the All-Tournament Team: Eichel, Grzelcyk, Rodrigues and O’Connor. Notre Dame’s Robbie Russo and New Hampshire’s Grayson Downing completed the team. Eichel, Grzelcyk and O’Connor were unanimous selections.

With his three points, Eichel broke the BU freshman scoring record—previously held by David Silk (1976-77) and Mark Fidler (1877-78).  His 66 points (24G, 42A) are the most by a Hockey East freshman since Paul Kariya scored 100 in 1992-93.

Eichel, who scored six goals and five assists in the four conference tournament games, stretched his point streak to 12 games. Grzelcyk, who also had a three-point game against Lowell, now has 36 points for the season and has a point or more in 11 straight games. He has nine goals and nine assists in that streak.

O'Connor,  who improved his record to 23-3-4, has a nation's best .828 winning percentage.  He turned aside 22 River Hawk shots.

Eleven Terriers had points including O’Connor, who assisted on the game's first goal.
