Freshman
goalie Jake Oettinger, who yielded just three goals on 71 shots this past
weekend, earned Hockey East’s Defensive
Player of the Week honors. Oettinger, who literally “stole” a win against
Providence Friday night and was very strong on Saturday, had a 1.45 GAA and .958
save percentage for the two-game series.
Junior Nikolas Olsson, who scored the game-winner Friday and the
game-tying goal Saturday, was named to Hockey East’s weekly top performers list,
along with freshman Patrick Curry, who assisted on both BU goals Saturday.
Terriers
moved up a notch to #5 in the USCHO
Weekly Poll, while remaining at #5 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.
Seven
Terriers were named to the selection camp for the U.S. Junior National Team.
Joining two Team USA holdovers, defensemen Charlie McAvoy and Chad Krys, are Oettinger and four forwards, Kieffer Bellows, Jordan Greenway,
Patrick Harper and Clayton Keller. A total
of 27 players will report to the camp in Buffalo that runs Dec. 16-20, followed
by a final camp in Ontario beginning Dec. 21. Team USA will compete in the
World Junior Championships in Toronto and Montreal from Dec. 26 through Jan. 5.

defkit offers some thoughts on Saturday’s 2-2 tie with Providence.
- Thought the Terriers started strong, and carried the play for the first 15
minutes or so, despite giving up the two goals (one on the PP, one immediately
after a PP ended). But then Providence took over and really controlled the pace
until the last 10 minutes of the game.
-
Bellows had an interesting night. He had a great opportunity to get an early
goal after a miscue by Hawkey behind the net, but rushed a tough angle shot, hitting
the side of the net. Then, he took a couple penalties before the period was
over and didn't see a shift in the second or third period. Credit David Quinn for
holding firm, despite the need for goals late in the game. I hope Bellows
handles the discipline the right way.
-
Thought PC did a great job neutralizing Greenway. There were very few instances
of him controlling the puck along the boards just waiting for the right
opportunity. PC had some good size on defense that helped its cause.
-
Needless to say, way too may penalties for BU. Some were tough luck (the
interference on Roberto when he was just trying to stay onside), and one or two
may have been questionable calls, but by and large they were deserved, and in
some cases lazy. You know the team is having a tough go of it when JFK ends up
in the box twice.
-
Hickey's goal was a tremendous individual effort. It seemed no forward was in
the lower half of the offensive zone when he made his push to the net. He
converted his rebound so quickly that in live action I thought it was a
deflection off of his original shot.
-
On the game tying goal, BU was fortunate that a PC player got tangled up with
McAvoy earlier in the play. As a result McAvoy was down low by the time the
puck bounced to him, and he was able to find a wide open Olsson. My feeling is
that if the PC player lets McAvoy go initially, he would have been much higher
up near the blue line and the play would not have been there.
-
Carpenter had a shorthanded breakaway in the waning seconds of overtime. Had he
scored, that game would have been one of the more memorable games at HAA.
-
Overall, the Terriers have some work to do in terms of discipline and they need
Keller back to really ignite the offense.
