Game Day: Terriers head to Lowell; Oettinger pitches a shutout UPDATED

#9 Terriers continue conference action with a home-and-home series against #18 UMass Lowell, beginning with tonight’s game at Tsongas Arena. Puck drop is at 7:15 p.m. for the contest that will stream on ESPN+

The River Hawks bring a 4-2-0 record after edging Northeastern last weekend, 3-2, despite being outshot 28-17.  The offense is led by seniors Carl Berglund (4-4-8) and Brian Chambers (2-5-7), Grad transfer d-man Jon McDonald has chipped in with four points and senior Zach Kaiser has scored twice. The goal-tending duties have been split between junior Henry Welsch and Latvian Gustavs Davis Grigals, a grad transfer from Univ. of Alaska.

Despite BU’s substantial lead in the all-time series (78-35-12, Norm Bazin’s teams have been a tough challenge for the Terries over the past 30 meetings, with a 16-10-4 edge, including 3-0 and 2-1 wins early last season.

Head Coach Jay Pandolfo sees similarities in Lowell’s game to the structured approach BU faced from UConn. "Offensively, you can’t force things," he explained. "They’re always going to have four or five guys in the neutral zone. We’ve got to make sure we’re not playing into their game and turning the puck over. They swarm you…you’ve got to keep the puck moving before they try to outnumber you."

When generally pleased with his own squad’s efforts, he noted that the Terriers have been inconsistent, “especially on Friday nights, so hopefully we can rectify that.”

While injured goalie Drew Commesso “has been doing well” and has been practicing this week, Pandolfo said on Thursday “I’m probably going to go back to Vinny [Duplessis, photo] tomorrow night and we’ll go from there.”

Hockey East Player of the Week Matt Brown, a former River Hawk, leads BU and the conference in scoring with nine points (4G,5A), followed by Lane Hutson with six and captain Dom Fensore and Ryan Greene with five. Greene, Sam Stevens, Jeremy Wilmer and Luke Tuch all have two tallies.

Looking ahead

USA Hockey has begun streaming all NTDP U18 and U17 home games free of charge, allowing BU fans to view future Terriers in action. The free streams will include games against USHL, NCAA and international.

Jake Oettinger stopped all 27 shots, including seven by Alex Ovechkin, as the Stars blanked the Caps, 2-0. It was Oettingers first shutout of the season.

Joel Farabee’s second goal was the game-winner in the Flyers’ 4-3 win against Florida. The New York native also added an assist

Charlie Coyle got the Bruins offensive started with a pretty individual effort as Boston routed Detroit, 5-1.

 

 

Women’s Team

Terriers will face off against Merrimack in a two-game weekend series. Tonight’s game, which begins at 6 p.m., is at Lawler Rink in North Andover.

BU, coming off a pair of losses to BC, has a 2-4-0 record, while the Warriors stand at 1-6-1. BU is 8-0-5 in its past 13 meetings with the Warriors.

►Terriers will face Holy Cross at this season’s Frozen Fenway on January 6. With a 6:30 p.m. start time, the game will be played under the lights.
