Quinn Hutson hat trick powers BU past Waterloo; Women fall to Union UPDATED

Behind a hat trick from freshman Quinn Hutson and a highlight reel goal by sophomore defenseman Ty Gallagher, the #9/12 Terriers defeated Waterloo University, 7-1, in an exhibition game at Agganis Arena. Junior Dylan Peterson and freshman Jeremy Wilmer each had three assists while senior assistant captain Jay O’Brien provided a pair of helpers.

Junior goalies Drew Commesso and Vinny Duplessis split the netminding duties, making a combined 11 saves.

The extremely one-sided contest saw BU outshoot the Warriors 65-12, including a 23-5 first-period advantage. But it was Waterloo that connected first, scoring at 12:50 on a 3-on-2 rush after BU dominated the first half of the period. Matt Brown quickly answered, converting a loose puck in the crease, and the period ended at one apiece.

Quinn Hutson scored both of BU’s second period goals, one-timing a Wilmer pass and then tapping in a drop pass from Peterson at the goalmouth.

After the Warriors had a few opportunities turned away early in the third, Gallagher,deked a defender at the right point, skated to the bottom of the circle and roofed a shot past goalie Dan Murphy.

A series of Waterloo penalties, including a major, kept BU on the power play for a big chunk of the third period and the Terriers took advantage. Quinn Hutson took a pass through the slot from brother Lane Hutson and completed his hat trick at 12:12 Just over a minute later, senior Ethan Phillips, unmarked at the bottom of the right circle, one-timed Peterson’s feed from behind the goal line.

In the final minute of the period, Tristan Amonte scored a shorthanded goal, muscling past a defender to get to the net and fire a shot home.

O’Brien was particularly strong at the face off dot, winning 12 of 15 draws, while senior Sam Stevens and freshman Ryan Greene each won 7 of 12.

BU converted on two of seven power plays and, showing better discipline than in the Bentley game, took just two minor penalties, both in the third period, and killing them.

Summing up his team's performance, Coach Jay Pandolfo said "A lot to be happy about tonight –– I thought for the most part we played the right way.

"The speed of our guys, the pace we play at, I think that made a big difference for us tonight," he added. “I thought we were on pucks, I thought we were transitioning really fast." 

Regarding Hutson's big night, Pandolfo explained, "He knows how to put the puck in the net, he has that skill. It’s not easy to do but he can shoot the puck past the goalie –– at the end of the day, that’s what you need to win games."

Chris Umana's Terrier Takeaways

- A smaller crowd than last week, but that is to be expected for an exhibition game. [Note Matt Brown called out the crowd’s strong support in his post-game comments.]

- Not quite as chippy as some past games against Canadian colleges - at least until the third period when frustration began to boil over for the visitors.

- The Hutson brothers were the stars of the game.  Lane has been absolutely as advertised.  Great vision.  Great passer.  Incredibly poised and slick with the puck.  Has a great ability to head fake opponents to open up space for himself.  And, although we knew that Quinn was also talented, he has been even better than advertised.  Great to see his efforts rewarded tonight with the hat trick.

- All 10 defensemen that were dressed saw ice time.  This is great experience for some of the younger guys, who are a bit deeper on the depth chart like Getz and Page.

- It will be interesting to see how the lines looks when Skoog and Tuch get back in the lineup - both did not play tonight.

- BU had 65 shots on net tonight and 122 shot attempts!  I can't remember the last time a Terrier team had that many attempts.  

- Also very nice to see Vinny Duplessis get some game action.  He looked sharp despite seeing limited shots.  Other players that stood out for the Terriers were Matt Brown, Jay O'Brien and Ryan Greene.  And a nice goal by Tristan Amonte as time winded down in the third period.

- I thought that BU did not play quite as well as they did a week ago.  Despite how well the Waterloo goalie played in the first period, BU could have had more goals in the first and second periods.  Too many shots missed the net.  The Terriers were trying to go high against the small goalie from Waterloo but sent too many shots high over the net.  Waterloo also did a decent job blocking BU shots and taking away passing lanes in the middle of their defensive zone and in front of the net.  

- Next week will be a much better measuring stick for the Terriers against a very talented Michigan squad on the road.  

 

Looking ahead

2023 recruit Jack Harvey scored his fourth and fifth goals and added an assist in Chicago’s 6-4 win against Madison. 2023 recruit Jack Musa brought the Capitols to within one late in the third period with his third goal.

2023 recruit Doug Grimes scored his second goal in Lincoln’s 6-2 win against Omaha.

2023 recruit Anton Castro stopped 23 of 26 shots in regulation and overtime, but Fargo lost to Sioux Falls in a shootout, 4-3. 2023 recruit Michael LaStarza had one of the Stampede’s shootout tallies.

2023 recruit Gavin McCarthy assisted on a pair of goals as Muskegon defeated Cedar Rapids, 6-2.

2023 recruit Jack Gorton scored his second goal in two nights and once again it was Victoria's only tally as the Grizzlies fell to Vernon, 2-1, in  a shootout.


Women’s Team

Terriers dropped a 3-1 decision to Union at Walter Brown Arena, splitting the pair of games with teams from New York’s Capital region.

A goal by the Dutchwomen early in the first period was matched by senior defenseman Nadia Mattivi. She was assisted by Julia Nearis and freshman Sydney Healey. Union went up by a goal on a first-period power play.

Despite outshooting Union 29-20 over the final 40 minutes, BU was unable to produce an equalizer. The visitors added a score just before the 15 minute mark.
