Poll story, SNL, Greer makes B's roster--UPDATED

Following the dominating exhibition win Saturday, BU has remained at #9 in the DCU-USCHO Weekly Poll, two spots behind #7 Northeastern and three behind next weekend’s foe, #6 Michigan. But in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll, the Terriers vaulted from #12 to #9. That ranking has the Huskies at #8 and the Wolverines at #6. ESPN’s John Buccigross has the Terriers at #8 in his top 16.

Hockey East has announced a NESN Game of the Week initiative with a schedule of regular-season games to air on NESN and NESN+. Five Terrier games are included: two for the men and three for the women. Interestingly, all five are away games. These games, like all Hockey East games, will stream live on ESPN+

Men: Nov. 11 @ UMass, Jan. 28 @ BC. Women: Oct. 14 @ UNH, Oct. 21 @ BC, Jan. 8 @ NU.

 

SNL—Saturday Night Leftovers

Freshman Quinn Hutson’s three goals earned him the player of the game jacket   

Hutson’s hat trick against Waterloo was the most goals a Terrier has scored in an exhibition game since Patrick Harper introduced himself to BU fans with five goals in a 10-2 win (video) against Prince Edward Island on Oct. 1, 2016. Clayton Keller, also a freshman, had a hat trick as well.

The older of the two Hutson brothers also has a three-game goal-scoring streak at Agganis Arena. He registered the first tally in the 8-2 win against Bentley and, last Dec. 11, skating with the NTDP U18s, his shorthander was the margin of victory in a 4-3 win over the Terriers.

Eleven different Terriers have found the net in the first two tilts with Hutson and senior Matt Brown having scored in both games. Brown told the Boston Hockey Blog that he attributes BU's early success to the get-to-the-net mentality the team has taken to heart. 

“Getting pucks on net and willingness to get to the net,” Brown said. “We’re doing a good job of getting pucks through and it’s all about beating their D men to the rebounds.”

Hutson accounted for eight of BU’s 122 shot attempts, putting seven of them on goal. Senior Jay O’Brien led with 16 attempts and 10 shots on goal.


Looking back

Goalie Vinnie Purpura, who played briefly in two seasons for BU, began his third season at Long Island University with an emphatic bang. A week ago, he led the Sharks to a tie with Northeastern through regulation, before losing, 3-2, in overtime. This past weekend, Purpura stepped 16 shots in a 7-1 win against Stonehill and then yesterday turned aside 37 shots enabling LIU to tie #7 Quinnipiac, 2-2, on the Bobcats’ home ice.

A strong pre-season has earned A.J. Greer a spot on the Bruins' season-opening roster, joining Charlie Coyle. Matt Grzelcyk and Charlie McAvoy will begin the season on the injured list.

Alex Chiasson, who was in Arizona’s training camp on a professional tryout contract (PTO), was released in the Coyotes’ final cuts. A 10-year NHL veteran who played for Vancouver last season, he has scored 114 goals and added 110 assists.

Alex Vlasic, who signed a contract with the Blackhawks at the end of last season, made Chicago's opening-day roster. The Blackhawks cut Adam Clendening who was in camp on a PTO after spending last season in the Flyers organization.

Tara Watchorn's newly-minted D1 program at Stonehill sweeps Post (4-3 ot, 4-2) to open its season.
