UPDATED Podcast interviews with Pandolfo and Pereira; World Championships update

The Boston Hockey Blog crew’s final Terrier Hockey Talk podcast is a highly entertaining conversation with Associate Head Coach Joe Pereira looking back at the past season, recruiting, his playing career as a member of the 2009 national champions and the path that led him back to Commonwealth Avenue.

Inside BU Hockey also wrapped up its season with Bernie Corbett and Head Coach Jay Pandolfo breaking down the 2022-23 season in which Pandolfo guided the Terriers to a Hockey East Championship and to the Frozen Four. They also look ahead to next season. Also, Owen Gund talks with rising sophomore Devin Kaplan.

IIHF World Championships

Captain Nick Bonino scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, as Team USA breezed past Hungary, 7-1, on Sunday for its second preliminary-round win. Luke Tuch scored the final goal for the U.S. while Lane Hutson added an assist and was +4.

In today’s 3-2 U.S. win against Germany, Hutson set up Sean Farrell’s tying goal before Matt Coronato connected on the winner. Next up for Team USA is Austria on Wednesday.

One of our sharp-eyed readers spotted a familiar name on host Finland’s roster, Ahti Oksanen, who was a key cog in the offense for BU’s 2015 national finalist squad. His 25 goals that season were exceeded only by Jack Eichel’s 26. After a season in the North American minor leagues, Oksanen, who began his Terrier career on defense before moving to forward, returned home to play with SaiPa in the Lilga. He currently skates for IK Oskarshamn in the Swedish Pro Leagues (SHL). In this video from the 2015-16 season, he scores twice, including the overtime game-winner against Denver on Halloween.

Looking ahead

Youngstown has won the first two games of the best-of-five Clark Cup finals. In Friday’s 4-1 win against Fargo, 2023 recruit Shane Lachance scored his third playoff goal and then assisted on a power play tally. The Edmonton draft pick (6th round, 2022) had 33 regular season goals, tripling his previous season’s total.

Looking back

Eichel is the top playoff scorer (6-8-14) for the Vegas Golden Knights who advanced to the Western Conference final, eliminating Edmonton, 4-2. Eichel had a goal and two assists in Vegas’ game five win and an assist in game six.

Vegas will face Dallas in the conference final after the Stars edged Seattle, 2-1, in game seven of their series. Jake Oettinger stopped 22 of 23 shots, keeping the Kraken off the scoreboard until they scored an extra-attacker goal with 19 seconds remaining. It was Oettinger's first game seven win.
