Webber, Tuch, Stevens sign pro contracts; Portal news

Grad student Cade Webber signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs and has joined the team in Tampa as the Leafs prepare to begin the playoffs.  A 2019 Carolina draft pick, his rights were traded to Toronto in March. Webber, who earned Hockey East Defensive Defenseman of the Year honors from Hockey East, set an NCAA record with 133 blocked shots this season and finished his BU career with 298 blocks and a +35.

Senior assistant captain Luke Tuch signed a two-year entry-level contract with Montreal. He also signed a one-way contract with AHL Laval, enabling him to play with the Canadians’ minor-league team the rest of this season.

Selected in the second round of the 2020 draft, Tuch registered career bests this past season in goals (10), assists (20), points (30) and plus-minus (+17).

Grad student SamStevens, a fan-favorite who anchored BU's fourth line, took key d-zone faceoffs and was a strong defensive presence, had a career-best 10 goals this season and finished his BU career with 50 points.

►After signing a three-year entry-level contract with Montreal, Lane Hutson skated in the Canadians final two games of the season, registering an assist in each game. The entire Terrier team attended Tuesday’s finale at the Bell Center to support Lane.

Portal News

Junior defenseman Ty Gallagher is now in the transfer portal along with sophomore Jeremy Wilmer and senior Thomas Jarman.  The Terriers have received two commitments from the portal, center Matt Copponi, who was Merrimack’s top scorer this past season, and four-year Lowell defenseman Brehdan Engum.

Thomas Joseph "TJ" Connolly obituary, Boynton Beach, FL

Former Terrier hockey captain and All-American TJ Connolly passed away on March 12 in Boynton Beach Florida.  TJ's life will be celebrated in Boston on Saturday, May 4, 2024, from 12-4 pm at Boston University's Agganis Arena in the Francis D. Burke Club Room.

TJ was a Boston University graduate and played on the BU hockey team from 1980 to 1984. He always wanted to play hockey at BU. He wore #7 in memory of his late brother and for Ma. In 1984, TJ was Captain of the BU team that made it to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament and the finals of the ECAC Championship, and was named an All-American, All-East, and All-ECAC. He also received the Boston University Scarlet Key.

Looking ahead

2024 recruit Jack Pridham and 2025 recruit Callum Hughes have been named to the BCHL’s 2023-24 All-Rookie Team. Pridham, a 6’2” right wing, finished the regular season tied for second among first-year scorers with a 23-25-48 scoring line, while left wing Hughes was fourth in rookie scoring with a 23-19-42 line.  The two West Kelowna forwards are tied for second in playoff scoring thus far with eight points each. Pridham is a finalist for the league’s Rookie of the Year award.

Four 2024 recruits will skate in the IIHF World U18 Championships in Finland beginning April 25: Kamil Bednarik, Cole Eiserman and Cole Hutson for Team USA and Alexander Zetterberg for Sweden. The US and Sweden will play a pre-tournament exhibition game this Saturday. NHL Network will air all of Team USA's games.

Looking back

Jake Oettinger made 25 saves—including this incredible one with his paddle—in the Stars’ 2-1 overtime win over St. Louis, which clinched first-place in the Western Division. The save earned the #1 spot on ESPN’s Top 10 on Wednesday night.

Clayton Keller recorded his 43rd assist as the Coyotes ended their season with a 5-2 win over the Oilers. Keller finishes with a team leading 76 points (33G,43A) for the Arizona franchise which has been sold and will relocate to Utah.

John Hynes, a member of BU's 1995 national champions, is currently head coach of the Minnesota Wild. He also was head coach of the Men's National Team in 2016 and 2019.
