#12 Northeastern's Joe Connor's one-timer past Mikhail Yegorov with 1:07 left in regulation broke a 2-2 tie sending the Huskies past #18/19 Terriers at Matthews Arena Friday night. Despite an improved effort, BU left the rink with another loss.

"I thought there were pockets of the game that we played well," Coach Jay Pandolfo told the media post-game. "I thought there were times in the game where, you know, some of the similar stuff we've seen from our team."

He was referring to a spate of defensive zone and center ice turnovers, especially in the opening period, that created grade A scoring chance. Yegorov, who stopped 22 shots, responded with big-time saves.

"We were playing pretty well. Couldn't find a way to score. And then, that's just disappointing that you allow a chance like that with a minute left. And just again, not good enough details there defensively, and it cost us."

Terriers held a 2-1 lead after one period on goals by Mick Frechette, playing his third game on defense, and Nick Roukounakis.

A minute into the game, Ryder Ritchie set up Frechette for a quick wrister from the blue line that sailed through traffic and past goalie Quentin Sigurdson. Jonathan Morello had the second assist.

The Huskies responded at 3:50 when Andy Moore found space behind BU defenders and tipped Dylan Finlay's shot from the point past Yegorov.

After two extended offensive-zone possessions by Northeastern, the Terriers regained the lead. Owen McLaughlin  tracked down a puck and sent it to Jack Harvey in the left circle. Roukounakis headed for the net, collected Harvey's pass and backhanded a shot past Sigurdson's glove for his second goal in two games.

BU had a 17-10 shot advantage in the middle period that included seven on unsuccessful power plays. but the only tally was scored by the home team. At 2:17, Austen May's wrist shot from the top of the right circle past a screened Yegorov drew Northeastern even.

Freshman John McNelis's speed created three grade A chances in the second period, but he didn't convert any of them. The third came on a short-handed breakaway that led to a penalty shot, that Sigurdson stymied.

Before the period ended BU killed off back-to-back penalties including 1:05 of 5-on-3.

Terriers had a shot and possession advantage in the third period, as well. Thirteen minutes in, Cole Hutson attempted a wrap-around and celebrated thinking he'd scored. The no-goal call on the ice was upheld after a review.

Northeastern was limited to just three shots in the final period. The last one proved to be the decider.

Despite registering 34 shots with Hutson and Ritchie combining for 10, the Terriers' top scorers produced just one assist.

"I really thought again, Morello, McNelis, Merrill, Roukounakis," Pandolfo pointed out, "those are the guys that have success for us right now, up front. You know, some of our guys that have been here for a little bit. Not so much."

The teams conclude the home-and-home series Saturday night at Agganis Arena.

Sad news to report. Former Terrier captain Tom Ryan has died. The West Newton, Mass., native, a four-year defenseman (18-37-55) who led the 1987-88 squad, was 59. His son, TJ Ryan, played for BU from 2013 to 2015.

After graduating, he was an assistant coach at Babson for three seasons. In 1992 he began a 24-year stint as game analyst on BU hockey broadcasts with his close friend Bernie Corbett. Fans will recall that Tom didn’t hesitate to criticize the Terriers, often bluntly, when warranted.

May his memory be a blessing.

Looking ahead

2026 recruit Caleb Malhotra scored a pair of goals and added two assists as Brantford thumped Sarnia, 7-2. The Toronto native, who earned first-star honors, has a 10-19-29 scoring line in 23 games.

2026 recruit Braidy Wassilyn scored his 10th goal in London's 6-3 loss to Sudbury. He has eight goals and three assists in his last nine games.

Looking back

Alex Vlasic scored his second goal, assisted by Ryan Greene but the Blackhawks fell to the Sabres, 9-3.

Behind 34 saves by junior Mari Pietersen, the Terriers raced past Providence for a 4-1 win at Walter Brown Arena.

After the Friars opened the scoring early in the first period, BU responded with goals two minutes apart by Lilli Welcke and Clara Yuhn.

Neither team could find the net over the next 40 minutes. Then at 16:08 of the third, Kaileigh Quigg connected on an insurance goal, followed quickly by a Riley Walsh empty-netter.
