Hutson OT goal pushes BU past NU; Women get shootout win

Cole Hutson's breakaway goal four minutes into overtime delivered the #18/19 Terriers a much-needed 4-3 win against #12 Northeastern and a split of the weekend series. With the victory, BU improves to 6-7-1, 4-4-0 HE.

Playing its best hockey in several weeks, BU had dominated the first 50 minutes of the contest, building a 3-1 lead on goals by Jack Harvey, Hutson and Jonathan Morello before surrendering two late scoresthe second with just 1:01 remaining—that sent the game to overtime.

“I thought we played a more simple game," Coach Jay Pandolfo told the media. "I thought we were winning more pucks all over the ice, and that’s part of it for us, just being more competitive on pucks. We were playing below their goal line and winning pucks, being able to sustain offensive zone pressure. That’s been a bit of an issue for us.”

“We’re a little shorthanded tonight, and for guys to step up, I just thought we played a much more complete game as a team, really, from start to finish." Pandolfo pointed out.

In addition to Sacha Boisvert and Conrad Fondrk, who also missed Friday's contest, BU played without Kamil Bednarik, who has a lower-body injury, according to Bernie Corbett

After the game, Pandolfo told the Terriers, "Everyone bought into playing a certain way and we played together, too. If we have that mindset, to play the game that way, we’re going to like the results…It’s fun to watch you guys play like that."

Right from the get-go, BU was skating with the jump and direct game that Pandolfo had been seeking. An early bench penalty to the Huskies for too many men on the ice gave BU a chance to revive its power play, which had been 0-for-18 in the previous four games.

The second unit converted at 4:09 with a pretty display of moving the puck low-to- high to open up space. Sascha Boumedienne slid the puck to Owen McLaughlin moving in from the point. Weaving through the left circle, the transfer from North Dakota drew a crowd and wired a pass to Harvey for a one-timer from Cole Eiserman's office. It was his fifth goal of the season.

Five minutes into the contest, the Terriers had a 7-1 edge in shots.

Terriers nearly notched a second power-play goal midway through period when Eiserman stickhandled through the Huskies only to be denied at the goalmouth (0:50 of the highlights reel).

BU doubled the lead at 13:33 on a patented Huston rush. He raced up the left side into the offensive zone and fired a sharp angle shot that Quentin Sigurdson defended. Collecting the rebound as he went behind the net, the Washington draft pick beat the goalie with a wrap-around.  Hutson had tried the same thing Friday night and thought he'd given BU a third-period lead, but after a review, the ruling was no goal. Gavin McCarthy and Boumedienne picked up the assists.

It looked like BU would end a near-perfect period with a 2-0 lead, but with nine seconds left McCarthy was called for cross-checking. NU won the ensuing draw, put a shot on goal, enabling Jacob Matthieu to jam the puck past Mikhail Yegorov with 2.7 left in the period.

Northeastern was back on the power play a minute into the second period when Brandon Svoboda was called for hooking.  A Husky turnover in the offensive zone sent Ben Merrill and Morello racing up ice on a two-on-one. Merrill faked a shot and slid the puck to the right circle where Morello one-timed it past Sigurdson's glove for his third of the season.

Late in the period, freshman Charlie Trethewey was whistled for contact to the head and was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct. Pandolfo made his displeasure with the call very plain. The Terrier penalty-killers were, in a word, lights out, (Okay, that's two words), preventing the Huskies from setting up in the BU zone until the final minute of the extended man-advantage and limiting them to three shots.

Shots for the period were 13-5 BU, despite the Terriers spending nine minutes on the penalty kill.

Unsurprisingly, the Huskies came out firing in the third period and for the first twelve minutes, the Terriers held them at bay. With 7:45 remaining an NU clear in hit Eiserman in the face and he immediately headed down the tunnel for repairs.

Thirty seconds later the Huskies cut the lead to one.  With the puck along the left boards, BU failed to clear the zone, leading to Vinnie Borgesi's one-timer from just above the right circle. Yegorov made the stop but the rebound went right to Dylan Hryckowian to the goalie's right and he buried it into the half-open cage.

Northeastern pulled Sigurdson for an extra skater with a buck twenty-five left in regulation. With the puck in the left corner of the BU zone, McCarthy fanned on a clearing attempt. Taking a pass from Borgesi, Hryckowian fired a shot from just outside the left circle. It was headed well wide of the net but it hit Hutson's skate and skittered behind Yegorov with just 1:01 remaining.

On Friday night, the Huskies had stunned BU with a game-winner with 1:07 left in regulation.

In overtime, both teams took penalties and were still skating three-aside when Hutson's put on the hero's mantel. In the BU zone, McCarthy won a battle along the boards and sent Hutson, along with McLaughlin, away on a 2-on-0 rush. Hutson closed to within ten feet and, while being slashed by a trailing Hryckowian, wristed a shot past Sigurdson's glove. It was his his seventh goal and third game-winner.

Terriers outshot the Huskies, 47 to 24, and won 34 of 62 face offs.
