UPDATED Terriers edge Cornell to claim Red Hot Hockey #12

 


Cole Eiserman, a first-round draft pick in 2024 by the New York Islanders, is certain to score a bunch of goals at Madison Square Garden over the next five or ten seasons when the Isles come to visit the Rangers. But his very first MSG goal is one he--and Terrier Nation--will long remember. 

His blast from the right circle at 5:24 of the third period beat the Big Red's Alexis Cournoyer high to his stick side to break a 1-1 tie and send BU to a 2-1 win in the 10th edition of Red Hot Hockey.  With the victory, the Kelley-Harkness Trophy, named for legendary BU and Cornell head coaches, returns to Commonwealth Avenue for the first time since 2015. 

While BU has had Cornell's number in recent meetings in the NCAA Regionals and at Agganis Arena, the Big Red had been on a four-game winning streak at the MSG event. The Red Hot Hockey series now is tied at 4-4-2.

Eiserman, who also had the primary assist on BU's first-period power-play goal, was named the game's first star. The second star--could've been tied for first--went to sophomore goalie Mikhail Yegorov, who stopped 28 of 29 shots, including a bunch of grade A/high danger attempts by the Big Red, displaying the same skill, agility and quick glove that propelled BU to the Beanpot title and to the national championship game last season.

Closing the game out was anything but easy for BU. After Cornell pulled Cournoyer for an extra skater with just over two minutes left in regulation, a very questionable slashing call on Jonathan Morello created a 6-on-4 for nearly two minutes. 

During the 6-on-4, BU defensemen Gavin McCarthy, Charlie Trethewey and Cole Hutson made strong plays to send the puck the length of the ice. Hutson's clearing play barely missed going into the empty Big Red goal. 

Cornell's aggressive forecheck kept the puck in BU's end during the opening minutes and led to a Big Red power play, which the Terriers killed. Then, when BU had its first man-advantage, it took just nine seconds to cash in. Terriers won the draw and McCarthy passed to Eiserman in virtually the same spot as his eventual game-winner. His slap-pass to the crease was redirected home by Kamil Bednarik who had staked out a spot behind the defense. It was the sophomore center's third goal.

BU played some of its best hockey after taking the lead, but still was outshot 11-6 for the period.

Cornell ratcheted up the pressure in the second period, keeping the puck in the BU zone for long periods, forcing some of Big Mike's best saves of the evening. Cornell finally put one past him at the 15:00 mark. A weak clearing attempt by BU led to two quick shots by Cornell. Yegorov stopped the first one, but on the second, by Reegan Hiscock, he had no chance.

Shots for the period were 12-6 Cornell.

Both teams tightened up defensively as the final period began. Just over five minutes in, freshman Charlie Trethewey collected a loose puck just outside of the BU blueline and quick head-manned the puck to Eiserman who skated into the right circle and rifled a hard-angle shot past Cournoyer. The tally not only restored BU's lead but it ended a four game drought for last season's top rookie goal-scorer with 25. He now has seven.

Terrier penalties gave Cornell three power plays in the period, including the one in the last two minutes. BU's penalty killers were superb, allowing just one shot on goal, although Cornell's Hoyt Stanley rang a shot off the crossbar with just over a minute left in regulation. 

Final shots were 29-17 in favor of Cornell. BU killed all four penalties it took and converted on one of three power plays.

Looking ahead

2026 recruit Tynan Lawrence scored a hattrick in Muskegon's 5-3 win over Dubuque. The last two goals were ENGs and he also added an assist. Lawrence has four goals in the two games since returning from an injury. He registered nine shots on goal in Saturday's win.

2026 recruit Caleb Mahotra scored his 11th goal and assisted on two others to power Brantford past Kitchener, 4-3. He was +4 and earned the game's first star.

2027 or 2028 recruit Andrei Nikolaev pitched back-to-back shutouts as the NJ Titans swept the Johnstown Tomahawks On Friday, he stopped all 18 shots in a 2-0 win and on Saturday turned aside 13 attempts in a 4-0 blanking. The wins were the second and third shutouts this season-- 2nd best in the NAHL-- for the 6'4" netminder from Moscow who lowered his GAA to 2.25 and increased his save percentage to 0.923.


Looking back

Trevor Zegras scored his ninth goal and added an assist in the Flyers' 5-3 win against the Devils. Zegras has 24 points
