Terriers fall in semis, 5-2

The Terriers up and down season came to an end last night with a 5-2 loss to Maine in the Hockey East semifinal. The Black Bears scored twice in the first period and extended their lead to 3-0 seven minutes into the second. Captain Kevin Shattenkirk got BU on the board early in the third and Vinny Saponari's shorthander drew the Terriers within one with 3:37 left.

But there would be no repeat of last Spring's miracle comeback in the NCAA final. Ross Gaudet's breakaway opportunity was stopped by goalie Dave Wilson and moments later, a Maine power play goal restored the two-goal lead. An empty netter closed out the scoring.

Nick Bonino assisted on both BU goals, giving him a team-leading 38 points for the year. Saponari's goal and assist brought him to 30 points. Shattenkirk, also with a goal and an assist, has 27.

With the loss, BU finishes the season at 18-17-3. Maine advances to the final against BC tonight.
