Men's, women's teams continue practice; Shattenkirk delivers game 2 GWG

Terriers have been practicing at Walter Brown Arena since Sept. 8 in groups of 10-11 with no lines and defensive pairings set at this point. An early report indicates that freshman goalie Drew Commesso has been impressive. Here are some of his highlights for last season with the NTDP U18s.

USA Hockey's draft profiles of last season's U18s includes three Terrier freshmen: Commesso, and forwards Luke Tuch and Dylan Peterson

Stanley Cup Finals

Terriers join Wisconsin as the only NCAA teams with players on both Stanley Cup finalists’ rosters: Kevin Shattenkirk with Tampa Bay and Jake Oettinger with Dallas. In addition, former Terrier Buddy Powers—later a coach at both Bowling Green and RPI—is a scout for the Stars.

In game two of the Finals, Shattenkirk’s point shot through a crowd proved to be the game-winner. The goal, the former BU All-American’s second of the post-season, gave the Lightning a 3-0 first period lead and they hung on for a 3-2 win to tie the series at one apiece.

Looking ahead

2021 or 2022 recruit Doug Grimes was selected by Sioux City in a Special USHL Dispersal Draft after two franchises, Cedar Rapids and Madison, opted not to participate this season due to arena damage (Cedar Rapids) and Covid-19 restrictions (Madison).

A 6’3” 185 lb. right wing, Grimes had been selected by the Roughriders in the first round (#15 overall) of the 2020 USHL Entry Draft. Last season as a junior at Dexter Southfield he tripled the previous season’s output, scoring 48 points in 30 games—including a team-leading 23 goals—playing for Coach Dan Donato. Grimes also scored 15 points for Cape Cod Whalers 18U.

At Sioux City, he’ll join 2021 recruit Brian Carrabes who was traded to the Musketeers late last season after spending most of the year with Sioux Falls. He scored 27 points (8G,19A). The USHL plans to begin its season on Nov. 6 with teams playing 54 regular season games.

►2021 recruit Quinn Hutson scored his third goal in two intra-squad games for the BCHL Penticton Vees helping Team White to a 3-0 win over Team Blue. He scored twice in the first game a week ago.

2022 recruit Shane Lachance has been ranked the #2 New England prospect for the 2021 NHL draft by New England Hockey Journal. He’s the son of former Terrier and NHLer Scott Lachance and the grandson of BU coaching legend Jack Parker.

2. Shane Lachance
Tabor, 8/30/04, LW, left shot, 6-4/190
NCAA commit: Boston University

Lachance has elevated his game quite a bit over the past 24 months. The Andover, Mass., native played two seasons of high school hockey for his hometown team before repeating his sophomore year at Tabor in 2019-20. He’s always had the size, but he’s filled out his frame and his skating has gotten much better. Lachance projects as a goal scorer who can play a power game from the left-wing position. He had 13 goals and nine assists in 28 games last season with the Seawolves. Lachance hasn’t been able to leave campus yet, but he’s scheduled to play split season for the Neponset Valley River Rats.

 Looking back

An NHL Coach’s Association video, Coaches Confidential, features three head coaches who were NCAA standouts. The Penguins’ Mike Sullivan and the Rangers’ David Quinn—both are former BU captains and Quinn also was Terrier head coach for five seasons—were joined by the Red Wings’ Jeff Blashill, a former Western Michigan coach who played goalie at Ferris State.
