14 named All-Academic; Somerby seeks a title

Editor's note: This post was intended for June 24, but didn't publish until today (6-28) and is located above today's post announcing defenseman Ty Gallagher's commitment (link) for the coming season. Sorry for the confusion.

A program-record 14 Terriers have been named to the 2020-21 Hockey East All-Academic Team, led by Max Kaufman who earned Distinguished Scholar status with his fourth berth on the All-Academic team. The first three were at Vermont. Sophomores Jamie Armstrong, Markus Boguslavsky and Sam Stevens each were repeat honorees.

First-year honorees include Drew Commesso, Joseph Campolieto, Domenick Fensore, Thomas Jarman, Jay O’Brien, Luke Tuch, Ethan Phillips, Wilmer Skoog, Alex Vlasic and Cade Webber.

Looking back

One Terrier is still chasing a championship this season. Defenseman Doyle Somerby, who captained BU’s 2016-17 team, has been a blueline mainstay for the ECHL South Carolina Stingray, who are facing the Fort Wayne Komets in the Kelly Cup finals. After three seasons with AHL Cleveland, Somerby was loaned by Columbus to AHL Tucson earlier this season. Following 24 games with the Toros, he joined the Stingrays, playing 17 regular season games and, thus far, all nine playoff games.

On this date in 2000, Rick DiPietro (Boston University) and Dany Heatley (Wisconsin) become the first NCAA players to be selected 1-2 in the NHL Draft.

Looking ahead

2022 recruit Nick Roukounakis has committed to play for BCHL West Kelowna next season. The 6-2, 220 left wing put up 11 goals and 16 assists in 26 games for Tony Amonte’s Thayer Academy Tigers during his sophomore season. With prep hockey suspended this past season, he suited up in five games for the NTDP U18s. The Pembroke, Mass., native was ranked #184 among North Americans for the July NHL Entry Draft.

In a free article, Neutralzone spoke with 2023 recruit Ryan Fine.  A high-skilled right-shot forward, Fine earned a roster spot on next season’s NTDP U17s. This past season, he skated for the Mid-Fairfield Rangers 15U and for Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey, finishing second on the team with 17 points en route to the Gordon Cup title. Fine was the first 2023 recruit to commit to an NCAA school.

Women's Team

The Terrier women also set a program record with 17 players named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team. Rachel Allen and Corrine Schroeder both earned Distinguished Scholar status, while Kate Stuart became a three-time All-Academic.

Two-time honorees: Nara Elia, Courtney Correia, Kaleigh Donnelly, Brooke Esroy, Nadia Mativi and Grace Parker. First-time honorees: Andi Calderone, Catherine Foulem, Lacey Martin, Julia Shaunessy, Alex Allan, Haylee Blinkhorn, Nicole McGuigan and Emma Wuthrich.
