Head Coach Albie O’Connell has added a pair for former BU captains to his staff: new Associate Head Coach Jay Pandolfo (as reported here yesterday) and new Director of Hockey Operations Doug Friedman. A press release announced those two along with volunteer goalie coach Brian Daccord (reported last month) and new video coordinator Jon Sherman.

A rugged left wing, Friedman is a member of the BU 100-point club with a 43-62-105 scoring line with 251 PIMs. He played for three Frozen Four squads, including the 1991 and 1994 national finalists, captaining the latter team while being named New England College Best Defensive Forward.
His seven-year pro career included 16 games with the Edmonton Oilers and two with Nashville. In 1996-97, he won a Calder Cup championship with Hershey, scoring 33 points in the regular season and another 15 in the playoffs.
Friedman was program director and head coach of the USPHL Twin City Thunder the past two years, following four seasons as director of athletics and head coach at Kent Hill School.
Sherman is a BU graduate student who recently finished a two-year coaching internship with the Washington Capitals. Previously the Indiana University grad was a hockey operations assistant for the Waterloo Black Hawks.

In a Zoom session, Pandolfo told reporters that leaving the Bruins was “a tough decision,” and that he wouldn’t have left the Bruins for any other college position. He and O’Connell first talked a month ago about the program and the possibility of a staff change. Their conversations continued and, after the playoff ended, Pandolfo made the decision, pointing out that family life balance—he has younger children—was a big part of it.
Pandolfo explained " I had four of the best years of my life there. To have this opportunity to come back, it just got more exciting by the day." He also noted that he’d
started with the Bruins in player development and would be doing the same at
BU, while bringing some "fresh ideas" to the program.

Looking back
The Sixth Annual BU Hockey Elders & Friends Golf Outing was held on June 17 at the Butter Brook Golf Club in Westford. Here’s event organizer Steve “Growler” Dolloff’s recap of the outing.
"We had our biggest group yet with 51 participants. This was great, considering none of our Canadian friends and teammates could come due to the borders still being closed.
"Among the players who attended were 12 from the 1971 and 1972 championship teams: Peter Yetten, Paul Giandomenico, Larry Abbott, Bob Gryp, John Grady, Toot Cahoon, Dan Brady, Tim Regan, Chris Henes, John Danby, Vic Stanfield and myself. In total, there were 30 BU hockey alums participating, including Ron DiVencenzo, captain of BU's 1959 team. And we had a quartet of friends from the team “up the block”: Ed Kenty, Ned Yetten, Mike Powers and Charlie Toczylowski."
