Matt Brown transfer now official; Looking ahead

As initially reported in April, left wing Matt Brown has transferred to BU following two seasons at UMass Lowell.

That transfer is now official and was announced Thursday by Head Coach Albie O’Connell who called Brown "a real competitor," adding that he is "an experienced player who will impact our team in many ways and be an offensive threat any time he takes the ice."

In 52 career games at Lowell, the 5-10 native of Wood-Ridge, N.J., had a 14-23-37 scoring line. He was the River Hawks top scorer as a freshman with 24 points. In last year’s shortened season, Brown scored eight goals and assisted on five others. Six of those goals came in his final seven games including two against BU and the 2OT game-winner vs. BC in the conference tournament semi-final.

Previously he played junior hockey with USHL Des Moines (30G,27A) and NAHL Odessa (16G,25A). In 2018, he was among the top scorers for gold-medal winning Team USA in the World Junior A Challenge.

Hockey Journalist Mark Divver had reported that Brown had drawn “significant interest from NCHC, Big Ten, Hockey East and ECAC schools.”

Looking ahead

With the NHL entry draft just a week away, Corey Pronman of The Athletic has projected all seven rounds with six future Terriers among his selections: forward Tyler Boucher #43, 2022 forward Nick Roukounakis #106, defenseman Ty Gallagher #131, 2023 forward Shane Lachance #172, defenseman Charles-Alexis Legault #179 and 2022 forward Jack Harvey #185.

NHL.com's Mike Morreale has ranked Boucher as the 10th best right wing available in the draft.

NTDP product Jeremy Wilmer, who had been a 2021 recruit, will instead play a season of junior with USHL Waterloo. The Blackhawks had made him the third overall pick in the recent Phase 2 USHL draft. A small but speedy right-shot center, Wilmer had an 11-25-36 scoring line in 37 games last season, third best on the U18s, but missed the World U18 tournament due to an injury. Prior to the NTDP, he played for the North Jersey Avalanche 16U AAA, centering fellow 2022 recruits Quinn Hutson and Devin Kaplan. Waterloo's roster also includes 2022 recruit Michael LaStarza.

While no future Terriers were named to the USA Hockey Select U-17 squad that will play in the Five Nations tournament in Switzerland next month, there is one BU connection. Gavin McCarthy, younger brother of Case McCarthy, was selected for Team USA following a strong performance in the USA Hockey Select 16 camp. Like his older brother, he is a right-shot defenseman who played in the Jr. Sabres organization.

McCarthy, who also participated in the NTDP evaluation camp last Spring, recently signed a tender with USHL Muskegon and will skate for the Lumberjacks next season

Women’s Team

Rising senior goalie Kate Stuart and rising sophomore defenseman Andi Calderone have been invited to attend Canada's National Women's Development Team Summer Camp in Calgary late this month. Both were also invited to last season and they’ll be joined by recent graduate Corinne Schroeder, a standout four-year goalie at BU.
