Awards; Polls; Prospect Game; Q&A with Doug Friedman UPDATED

Hockey East Defender of the Week honors for senior assistant captain Case McCarthy. Last season he was Defender of the Month of November and followed that with DOTW for the week of Dec. 26.

Poll Story

Following the wins against UMass and Cornell, BU moved up two slots to #5 in the USCHO Weekly Poll, jumping over Michigan and Penn State who both split conference series. It's BU's highest ranking of the year in the national polls. BU Hockey Stats tweeted:

BU is #5 in the USCHO Poll, their first time in the top 5 of the poll since October 9th, 2017, when they were #2

In the USAToday/USA Hockey Magazine Poll, BU made the same jump from #7 to #5.

BU began the season at #12 in the USCHO poll and #14 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll

The EverythingCollege Hockey Poll also has the Terriers at #5.

In the PairWise rankings, USCHO has the Terriers tied with Ohio State for sixth, while College Hockey News shows BU seventh--possibly a mathematical rounding situation.

Q&A With DHO Doug Friedman

In the summer of 2021, two former Terrier captains joined Albie O’Connell’s staff. Jay Pandolfo left the Bruins to become associate head coach. And Doug Friedman, Pandolfo’s teammate for two seasons (‘92-‘93 & ‘93-‘94) was named Director of Hockey Operations.

Prior to his return to Comm. Ave, Friedman had been program director and head coach of the USPHL’s Twin City Thunder. Before that, he was director of athletics and head boys' varsity hockey coach at the Kents Hill School in Maine and a coach for the Portland Junior Pirates

Friedman recently talked about his role with the Terriers and more in a Q&A session.

Q.  What does the Director of Hockey Operations position encompass?

A. A little bit of everything, helping the staff out to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible. It involves the general day to day of the program with everything from scheduling, travel, team and player items, and a variety of other responsibilities, and some hockey too.

Q. Just prior to joining the staff at BU, you were named head coach of the NA3HL team in Danbury. What went into the decision to take a position where coaching isn’t the number one responsibility?

A. When the opportunity to come back to BU presented itself it seemed like a good fit. And obviously to be back at BU meant a lot as well. I have really enjoyed being back at BU, and we have such a great staff to work with every day.

Q. How did your prior roles as Athletic Director at Kents Hill School and as program director for the USPHL Twin City Thunder prepare you for the DHO position?

A. It helped me quite a bit to continue to learn how to manage people, projects, and tasks. Being Athletic Director is similar to the DHO in a sense. In that position you had to deal with a wide array of items such as travel, equipment, budgets, and staff, to name a few. It’s nice as the DHO as you are only focusing and dealing with one team rather than multiple teams each semester.

Five future Terriers are rostered, but only four will play as 2023 recruit Gavin McCarthy, injured during the World Junior A Challenge last month, won’t be available. NTDP U18 goalie Michael Chambre and Youngstown center Brandon Svoboda (photo, center) will skate for Team Blue, while NTDP defenseman Kai Janviriya and Chicago forward Jack Harvey will play for Team White.

SNL (Saturday Night Leftovers)

Player of the game jacket goes to Lane Hutson.

Hutson and Dom Fensore have combined for 7 game-winning goals. Lane leads all Division 1 defensemen in GWGs with four and Dom is tied for second with three. Lane is also second in D1 in points per game among defensemen with 1.10 and is the leader in Hockey East.

Matt Brown 2nd in Hockey East in points per game with 1.33, while Lane's 1.10 is sixth best among all skaters.

Sam Stevens' tip-in of Case McCarthy's blast give him a career-best six goals. He's also tops the team in +/- with +12 and has the second best  face off win percentage, 52.7.

Home-ice advantage continues for the Scarlet & White: This season’s home record is 9-2-0 and BU is 15-4-2 in its last 21 games at Agganis Arena, with three of the four losses coming in overtime.

Saturday’s attendance of 5,346 was the second largest crowd of the Terriers’ season.

Cornell’s third-period power-play goal—scored two second before the penalty expired—was just the third man-advantage goal that BU has allowed at home all season.

Looking back

The AHL Hershey Bears retired Chris Bourque's #17 jersey Saturday night. He recorded 586 points in 6-5 games with the Bears, leading them to three Calder Cup titles. Bourque played in six AHL All-Star games and twice led the league in scoring. The son of Bruins' star defenseman Ray Bourque, he played one season at BU and was named MVP of the 2005 Beanpot.
