DFOW hat trick for Fensore; HE race going down to the wire; Olympic Anniversary UPDATED


A pair of two-point games against Vermont—including assists on the game-winner both nights—has earned Terrier Captain Dom Fensore recognition as Hockey East Defender of the Week for the third time this season. The Carolina Hurricane draft pick was previously named DFOW on December 5 and January 2. He also was chosen as the conference’s Army ROTC Defender of the Month for December.

 

Fensore, who scored his career-high ninth goal on Saturday, is fourth on BU with 26 points, along with a +11 and 34 blocks. He is a nominee for both the Hobey Baker Memorial Award and the Walter Brown Award for best American-born college player in New England.

Dylan Peterson (2G,A vs. Vermont), Quinn Hutson (game-winner on Friday) and Drew Commesso (first shutout of the season) were named to Hockey East's list of top performers.

Poll Story


Following the two-game sweep of Vermont, BU moved up two spots in the USCHO Weekly poll to #7.  Three other Hockey East schools are in the USCHO top 20: Northeastern #15, Merrimack #16 and Connecticut #17.

Terriers also sit at #7 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll, up one spot from last week’s result.  Everything College Hockey’s new ranking has BU slotted at #5.

In the updated PairWise ratings, BU now is #6, just ahead of Harvard. College Hockey News’ Power Ratings, based on the KRACH system, puts the Terriers at #9.

 

►The race for the regular-season Hockey East title comes down to the final weekend with three teams having an opportunity to claim the crown. BU is in first place with 48 points, followed by Merrimack with 47 and Northeastern with 46. Merrimack has just one game left, at home vs. Vermont. BU has a home-and-home with Providence, while NU has a home-and-home vs. Lowell. 

 

SNL (Saturday Night Leftovers)


▪Terriers are #4 in Division 1 scoring with 3.91 goals a game.

▪Among Hockey East skaters, Matt Brown is the overall points leader with 41 points while Lane Hutson, with 39, is third—and highest scorer Dman. Looking only at Hockey East conference games, Hutson is the leader with 30; Brown is third with 28.

▪Nationally, Brown is seventh in points-per-game with 1.26, while Hutson is ninth with 1.21.

▪The Terriers’ 22 wins—with two games remains—are the third most regular-season wins by a BU squad since 2000. The 2001-02 team, co-captained by Mike Pandolfo,was 23-8-3 in the regular season whilethe 2008-09 national champions stood at 27-5-4 prior to the post-season.

▪A leftover from Friday's win: Quinn Hutson's game-winner was his fourth of the season and ties him with brother Lane for the team lead. They're also tied for the Hockey East lead in that category. Both freshmen have scored 10 goals.

Brady Tkachuk scored his 25th goal in Ottawa's 6-2 win against Detroit.


 

Alex Chiasson and Danny O'Regan each scored his ninth goal in Grand Rapids' 5-4 overtime loss to Chicago in AHL action. Chiasson signed with the Griffins as a free agent, while O'Regan was acquired earlier this season in a trade with San Diego.

On this date....Feb. 28, 1960

The U.S. claimed its first Olympic Hockey Gold Medal at the 1960 games in Squaw Valley, defeating Czechoslovakia, 9-4, rallying with six goals in the third period.  Games were played outdoors. The 1960 U.S. squad included Terrier Dick Rodenheiser, who had previously won silver--along with another Terrier, Don Rigazio--in 1956 at Cortina, Italy.

The U.S. defeated Canada, the Soviet Union and the Czechs in the final three games.
