BU Hockey Historian Sean Pickett reports that Jay Pandolfo is the second D1 first-year coach to have won a conference regular-season title and conference tournament championship and taken his team to the Frozen Four. The first was Union College's Rick Bennett in 2012.

Staying within the family, Athletic Director Drew Marrochello has announced his choice to succeed Brian Durocher as women's head coach. It's BU standout and Olympian Tara Watchorn.

A strong, two-way defenseman for the Terriers from 2008 through 2012, Watchorn later became an assistant to Durocher and this past season launched Stonehill's D1 program as its first head coach. She led the Skyhawks to a 17-15-2 record and to the semifinals of the NEWHA, earning league Coach of the Year honors. She also was a finalist for  ACHA D1 National Coach of the Year.

As a BU blueliner, Watchorn produced 84 points in 127 games, earning All-Hockey East and All New England honors twice. She was a key cog in two Terrier conference championships and scored the title-winning goal in 2010.

Post-BU she played professionally in the CWHL for five seasons and won a gold medal with Team Canada in the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Beginning in 2017, Watchorn served as Durocher's assistant for four seasons, which included BU's first Beanpot title as a varsity program.

Looking back

GoPHNX.com's Craig Morgan takes a detailed look at Clayton Keller's recovery and rehabilitation from a broken leg a year ago and his drive to become one of the NHL's most dangerous forwards.

At some point over the season’s final five games, Keller is probably going to break Keith Tkachuk’s single-season Coyotes franchise points record of 86. He sits at 82 after his 14-game point streak was snapped on a disallowed goal in Saturday’s loss to San José.

Looking ahead

2024 recruit Will Zellers scored twice and assisted on two goals as Shattuck St. Mary's Prep defeated Buffalo Regals, 10-2, in the 18U championship game at the U.S. Nationals in San Jose. Zellers, who turns 17 on April 4 and played up this season with SSM's prep team, had 11 points in the tournament, finishing second on the Sabre in scoring. Despite missing time due to an injury this season, the Maple Grove, Minn., native had 37 points in 31 goals this season after a 79 point year with SSM's 15U squad.

2024 or 2025 recruit John McNelis led L.I. Gulls to the Tier 1, 16U title in the U.S. Nationals in San Jose. He scored his team-leading sixth goal in the Gulls' 2-0 win over Little Caesars. McNelis, who also played a few USHL games with Sioux Falls this season, was the Gulls' top point scorer in the tournament with a 6-3-9 line, just one point behind the 16U division leader.
