Terriers and Friars skate to 2-2 tie; Friars take shootout

#3 Terriers and #10 Friars skated to a 2-2 overtime tie at Schneider Arena last night, with Providence claiming the extra point in a shootout. For the second game in a row, BU saw a one-goal lead disappear when it yielded a power play goal.

BU goal-scorers were Nick Zabaneh, shorthanded, and Sam Stevens.

Combined with BC's win over UMass, the tie dropped BU into second place in the Hockey East standings. Terriers trail the Eagles, who have a game in hand, by one point.

Coach Jay Pandolfo post-game comments

Providence dominated the opening period, keeping the puck in the BU end for long stretches and running up an 18-7 shot advantage. The Friars got on the board at 4:34 when Chase Yoder's shot from the left point glanced off Riley Duran, who was screening Mathieu Caron and trickled through the five hole.

A slashing penalty to Macklin Celebrini at 13:52 gave the home team a chance to extend the lead, but it was the Terriers who scored. Zabeneh knocked a pass out of the air at the BU blueliner, turned on the jets for a breakaway and beat PC netminder Philip Svedebäck with a backhand shot.

With 17 saves in the period, Caron kept the Terriers in a game that could've gotten out of hand.

The second period was far more even in terms of shots and possession. BU took the lead at 11:30 when Jack Hughes forced a turnover deep in the Providence zone. Jack Harvey collected the puck below the left circle and quickly dished it to Steven, unmarked in the slot. He fired through Svedebäck's five-hole for his seven goal of the game.

The 2-1 BU lead didn't last long. Dylan Peterson's hooking penalty put PC on the man-advantage and they quickly converted on a Tanner Adams shot.

Neither team could break the tie in the third period that saw 11 Friars' shots to 10 for the Terriers. BU had it's only power-play opportunity of the game at 13:32, but managed just one shot on goal, which was defended.

"I didn’t like it tonight, that’s for sure," Coach Jay Pandolfo said, post-game. "We only had one power play, and we were not in sync in that one. The execution was not very good. It’s something that we are going to have to look at."

In the 3-on-3 overtime, all four shots--three for BU, one for Providence--were defended and it was on to the shootout. Svedebäck foiled attempts by Quinn Hutson, Macklin Celebrini and Lane Hutson. Caron stopped the first two PC shooters, but Hudson Malinowski went in off Caron's knee-pad.

Providence had a 37-29 shot advantage for the game, primarily due to the lopsided opening period. Caron stopped 35 shots in a nice bounce-back after the Beanpot loss.
