Macklin Celebrini Hockey East Player and Rookie of the Year graphic   

It’s Wednesday or, as some refer to it, Hump Day. This week, however, it’s Mack Day. Recognition and awards continue to flow for Macklin Celebrini. Hockey East has selected the uber-talented freshman center as both conference Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year. Previously, the still-just-17-year-old had been unanimously selected for Hockey East’s All-Rookie Team and as a First-Team All-Star.

Celebrini becomes just the fourth player to win Hockey East Rookie and Player of the Year awards in a single season following fellow Terrier Jack Eichel (2014-15), Maine's Paul Kariya (1992-93), and BC's Brian Leetch (1986-87).

In 23 Hockey East games, he led all players with 44 points, nine power-play goals, and 1.91 points per game, and was second with 23 goals, 112 shots on net, and a plus-18 on-ice rating. In addition to winning the league's scoring title, he won the Three Stars Award, presented to the player who has the highest number of points with respect to being named a star-of-the-game.

Celebrini is the fifth Terrier to win Hockey East Player of the Year and 11th to claim Rookie honors. He succeeds last year's Rookie of the Year, Lane Hutson. Prior BU PoY winners are: Jay Pandolfo (1996), Chris Drury (1997 & 1998), John Curry (2006) and Eichel (2015).

While these two awards, along with BC's Greg Brown winning Coach of the Year, were announced just today, the Terriers learned the news on Monday from a special guest.

Macklin Celebrini and Lane Hutson are Hobey Baker Top-10 finalists.

► Also today, The Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation revealed that Celebrini and Hutson were top 10 finalists for this year's award. The sophomore defenseman was also a top 10 finalist last season. He leads all NCAA defensemen with 1.33 points per game, is tied for first among all blue liners with 44 points and is the only NCAA defenseman with 10+ goals and 20+ assists.

Nationally, Celebrini's 1.67 points per game is tops in Division 1. He is second in the country with 30 goals and is third in the NCAA with 55 points. Among first-year players, he's first in goals and second in points. Celebrini is only the fourth Hockey East freshman to record 30 or more goals in the league's 40-season history.

BU also had a pair of top 10 Hobey Baker finalists in 2009 with Colin Wilson and Matt Gilroy, who won the award.

►This Week in Hockey East, Episode 22, examines the four teams playing Friday in the conference semifinals. 

 

Earlier in the week, Celebrini, Case McCarthy and Mathieu Caron were named to the conference's weekly list of top performers.

Macklin Celebrini, BU (Fr., F; Vancouver, B.C.) Potted his 30th goal of the year on Saturday to secure a 4-2 victory over Northeastern. He became the first Terrier since Chris Drury in 1995-96 to tally 30 goals. Last week, he was named a unanimous first team all star and was named a finalist for Hockey East Player of the Year and Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Year on Monday.

Case McCarthy, BU (Gr., D; Clarence Center, N.Y.) Netted his third goal of the season, the game-winning strike, to lift BU over Northeastern, 4-2, and into the Hockey East semifinal.

Mathieu Caron, BU (Jr., G; Abbotsford, B.C.) Stopped 21 of 23 shots to backbone BU to a 4-2 win over Northeastern in the Hockey East Quarterfinals.

Looking back

Kevin Shattenkirk assisted on three goals as the Bruins defeated Ottawa, 6-2. Brady Tkachuk scored his 31st goal for the Senators, while Matt Grzelcyk had an assist for Boston.
