#17 Terriers and #14 Northeastern— the only two Boston-based teams in the tournament—meet tonight in the Beanpot Championship game for the 15th time. Game time is 7:30 p.m. (depending on the length of the Harvard-BC consolation) with NESN broadcasting the game. NHL Network will air the game nationally.
It may be Valentine’s Day, but there is no love lost between the Terriers and Huskies.
BU holds an 9-5 edge in prior title match-ups with the Terriers’ first-ever Beanpot title coming against Northeastern in 1958. For BU it was a 9-3 win, powered by Billy Sullivan’s hat trick and two goals apiece from brothers Don and Dave MacLeod. BU’s most recent—and 30th—title came in 2015, also against NU, with Matt Grzelcyk firing the overtime game-winner.
Since then, Northeastern has defeated the Terriers in two finals. The first was in 2018 by a 5-2 score. The second, in 2020, was a 5-4 decision in 2OT on a Jordan Harris goal following a controversial penalty call. The Terriers had sent the game to overtime when Trevor Zegras scored the tying goal with 1.2 seconds left in regulation.
Earlier this season, the cross-town rivals met for a home-and-home in November with the Huskies winning a 1-0 overtime game at Agganis on Aiden McDonough’s goal. The teams tied, 2-2, the next night at Matthews Arena, with the Huskies earning the extra point in the eighth round of the shootout.
McDonough is Hockey East’s overall goals leader with 17 and tops the Huskies in scoring with 25. Sophomore Sam Colangelo has 20, including three goals and five assists in the last four games. Freshman Justin Hryckowian also has 20 and sophomore Gunnarwolfe Fontaine has 19. Harris, now a senior and junior Jayden Struble head a veteran blue line corp. With Devon Levi at the Olympic Games, TJ Semptimphelter has made four starts, winning the last three including the 4-2 win over BC last Monday. He has a 2.42 GAA and a .922 save percentage.
For BU, who will be the home team tonight, four juniors have at least 20 points: Wilmer Skoog and Domenick Fensore (24 each), Robert Mastrosimone (22) and Jay O’Brien (20). Two other juniors have been important contributors of late: Matt Brown (14 points and a nine-game points streak) and Ethan Phillips (14). Sophomore Vinny Duplessis has won his last four starts with a .944 save percentage and a 1.25 goals-against average for those games.

“We’re really excited to play in the second game at the Garden, a chance to play for the Beanpot Championship,” said Head Coach Albie O’Connell. “There’s a buzz around campus about it. There’s a buzz around the city. Obviously the Beanpot is back…it felt like 15 years ago.”
While noting that practices since Thursday’s win at Providence have emphasized “how we can execute our game,” O’Connell acknowledged that the Huskies “pose some challenges at the face off dot…and they’re very good on special teams. So that’s been an area of focus for just trying to sharpen our own.”

Beijing Olympic
In its final preliminary round game, Team USA edged Germany, 3-2, earning a bye in the qualification round. Drew Commesso, making his second start, stopped 24 shots, yielding an early power-play goal and a tally in the final minutes on a rebound in the crease after making the initial save. The U.S. next plays in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, facing the winner of the Slovakia-Germany qualification round game.

2005: The last time BU and NU met for the Beanpot title on Valentine’s
Day, the Terriers claimed a 3-2 overtime win on Chris Bourque’s tally. Goalie John Curry, who returned to the lineup after recovering from a separated shoulder, stopped 33 shots.

1972: Terriers faced Harvard in the tournament championship game, a repeat of the previous year and, just as in 1971, BU took a 4-1 victory at a sold-out Boston Garden. It was the Scarlet & White’s fifth title in six years.
Captain John Danby gave BU the lead just 12 seconds into its first power play opportunity, assisted by Bob Gryp and Ron Anderson. Terriers doubled the lead in the middle period, again with a man-advantage, on Ric Jordan’s 40-foot blast, set up by Danby and Bobby Brown. Peter Thornton upped the score to 3-0 early in the third period before Danby struck again on a 4-on-3 power play. Harvard’s Andy Burnes’ goal at 14:08 denied Dan Brady a shutout. He stopped 31 Crimson shots, many during 14+ minutes of Harvard power plays, and shared tournament MVP honors with Danby.
Looking ahead
2022 recruit Jeremy Wilmer scored his 16th goal and added his 37th assist in Tri-City’s 5-3 loss to Fargo. The left-shot forward from Rockville Center, N.Y., is tied for second on the USHL points chart with 53 and is the co-leader in assists.
2024 recruit Gavin McCarthy scored his first USHL goal in Muskegon’s 7-3 loss to Madison. The right-shot defenseman is the younger brother of Case McCarthy. 2022 recruit Quinn Hutson picked up an assist for the Lumberjacks, bringing his points total to 50.
Women’s Team
Terriers split a road series at Vermont, winning Friday night, 4-3 before falling, 5-2, on Saturday at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
On Friday, BU ended the Catamouts’ nine-game winning streak. Goal scorers were Nadia Mattivi, Courtney Correia, Lacey Martin and (GWG) Julia Nearis. Callie Shanhan stopped 27 UVM shots.
On Saturday, the Catamounts took a 3-0 lead after two and stretched it to four before Mattivi scored her second of the weekend. Parker McKenna scored a late goal for BU.
