Goalie Caron commits from the portal; Fensore signs with Carolina

Terriers have their first addition from the transfer portal and it’s an important one: Brown University sophomore goalie Matthieu Caron. He’ll have two years of eligibility at BU.

Following the announcement, CHN's Mike McMahon tweeted: "In my opinion, the most underrated goalie in the country. Big pickup for BU."

Considered by several observers as the best netminder in the portal, the 6’0” native of Abbotsford, B.C., started 24 games for the 11th place (in ECAC) Bruins last season with a 2.49 GAA and a .921 save percentage. He authored 3-0 shutouts of RPI and Holy Cross and outdueled Harvard’s Mitchell Gibson for a 3-2 win, stopping 27 shots. Caron’s save percentage was in the top three nationally among underclassmen.

His performance earned him Third Team All-ECAC and Second Team All-Ivy honors as well as a Hobey Baker Memorial Award nomination. Caron also was a finalist for the Mike Richter Award, given to the nation's top D1 goalie.

As a freshman, he appeared in 26 games with a 2.74 GAA and a .911 save percentage. Caron and posted back-to-back shutouts over Harvard and Dartmouth, becoming the first Brown goalie in 12 years to record consecutive shutouts.

Prior to committing to Brown, he spent multiple campaigns in the BCHL with the Chilliwack Chiefs with a 62-35-11 record. As a member of the Chiefs’ RBC National (Junior A) Champions in 2018, he was named First Star of the Year and Most Improved Player.

Looking ahead

Shades of BU's 2009 DC Miracle. 2023 recruit Doug Grimes scored his second goal of the game with 1.3 seconds remaining as Lincoln scored twice in the final minute and went on to defeat Fargo in overtime, 4-3. In addition to tallying his 23rd and 24th goals, he added a power-play assist. Grimes has 47 points in 47 games and is the Stars’ second leading goal-scorer. He’s had 12 multi-point games.

2023 recruit Jack Harvey scored his 37th goal in Chicago’s 6-2 loss to Dubuque. Harvey is second in the USHL in goals and third in scoring with 71 points.

The Steel were playing without leading scorer, 2023 recruit Macklin Celebrini, who has joined Team Canada for the upcoming IIHF World U18 Championships in Switzerland. Celebrini, who leads the USHL with points, and UConn's Matthew Wood are the only non-Major Junior skaters on Team Canada's roster. Other BU recruits set to play in the World U18s are: 2023 recruit Tom Willander for Sweden, and 2024 recruits Cole Hutson and Kai Janviriya for the U.S.

2024 recruit Kamil Bednarik scored his 20th goal in the NTDP U17s’ 6-3 loss to Green Bay. Bednarik has 44 points in 55 games.

2024 recruit defenseman Owen Keefe scored his fourth goal in Muskegon’s 6-4 loss to Muskegon.
