#2 Terriers resume Hockey East action, hosting Northeastern with puck drop set for 7 p.m. ESPN+ will provide a live stream and there’s also an international stream.
The Huskies (6-9-2) are BU’s second most frequent opponent with BU holding a 169-67-12 edge in the 248 meetings played all-time,. Last season, the teams split a home-and-home, winning on each other’s ice. NU took the third game in the opening round of the Beanpot.
After a 2-7-2 start, the Huskies are 4-2-1 in their last seven games with the tie coming this past Saturday against #5 Quinnipiac. Senior Alex Campbell, a transfer from Clarkson, and sophomore Jack Williams lead the NU attack with 18 points each and nine and ten goals respectively. Junior Justin Hryckowian and sophomore Cam Lund each have 14 points. Princeton transfer Pito Walton and sophomore Vinny Borgesi anchor an experienced defense while Cameron Whitehead has taken over for departed Devon Levi and has a 2.72 GAA in 16 games.
Head Coach Jay Pandolfo, noting that the Terriers have been looking forward to facing their cross-town rivals, told the media on Monday “they typically play very well against us, so we have to make sure we’re at our best tomorrow.”
He added, “I think our guys get pretty excited to play Northeastern. It’s been like that the last couple of years…I don’t think there’s any added motivation.”
“This is a big stretch for us coming off a break where you don’t play for almost a month,” Pandolfo explained, regarding the rugged schedule ahead. “Now it gets going pretty good with two games this week and getting back into playing back-to-backs leading up to the Beanpot. It is going to be a tough stretch and this is where the season really gets going. Having a decent first half you expect your team to learn and grow from what we did in the first half and that’s our expectation.”
Junior transfer Jack Hughes, who has been centering BU's third line, will be facing his former teammates for the first time, adding to the strong emotions that often accompany BU-NU games.
Pandolfo also reported that the three returnees from the
World Junior Championships--Macklin Celebrini, Lane Hutson and Tom Willander--
will be available tonight.
“When you play in that tournament on a huge stage and all of them played well and you can gain some confidence off it,” he said. “I expect them to come back and a have a great second half and I know they expect the same thing.
Hutson and Willander had been without their hockey bags for a few days, but Willander's father tweeted that they had finally arrived from Sweden.

►FloHockey.tv's Chris Peters analyzed the performance of U.S. defense and goalies at the World Junior Championships. Here is part of his comments about Hutson, who played 27 minutes in the gold-medal game and nearly as much in the semifinal:
I’ve always thought that Hutson is a more than adequate defender for his size and this tournament showed when he’s on, he can be just a plain good defender.
He made a lot of plays with his feet and his stick to break up plays or slow down the opposition. He’d get in the way, strip a puck and then it was going the other way. I thought his best game of the tournament was the gold medal game and he had zero points and zero shots on goal in that one. It’s because he focused in on defense and played a great game disrupting Sweden’s forwards and getting pucks out of the zone.

Lacey Martin’s second goal of the game—with just 2:26 left in regulation—was the game-winner as the Terriers edged Maine, 4-3, at Alfond Arena. The win is BU’s third in a row and moves the Terriers into a three-way tie for fourth place in Hockey East with Vermont and New Hampshire.

Former Black Bear Luisa Welcke’s power play goal—assisted by sister Lilli Welcke—gave BU a 1-0 lead after one. After Maine matched that tally, goals by Alex Law and Martin gave the Terriers a 3-1 lead, which the home team whittled to one late in the period.
Maine knotted the score early in the third, setting the stage for Martin’s heroics.
Freshman Mari Pietersen stopped 23 shots to gain her fifth win.
