#2 Terriers will play their second exhibition contest of the season, hosting Simon Fraser University from British Columbia. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET with a live stream on ESPN+. TSN+ also will carry the game in Canada.
SFU is the only Canadian school with NCAA membership. Right now, they are a Division 2 school and the hockey team is a club program. But under Coach Mark Coletta, the Red Leafs aim to become a Division 1 independent, as detailed in a College Hockey News feature story.
Towards that goal, SFU has scheduled nine exhibition games against U.S. D1 and D3 schools. So far, SFU has played—and lost-- six games against NCAA schools, five of them against D1 opponents. They lost to Michigan, 8-1, to Colorado College, 6-3, Lake Superior, 5-4, Robert Morris, 3-1, and LIU, 3-1.
Tristen Cross has lit the lamp in three of Simon Fraser's last four D-1 exhibitions, while Kiano Robinson assisted on Cross' goal at LIU and also added two helpers at Lake Superior State. Goaltender Kolby Matthews played 28 games across four seasons at RIT from 2019-23.
Following the tilt with the Terriers, the Red Leafs will stick around in New England with games against BC tomorrow and against Providence on Sunday.
It’s anticipated that the exhibition will enable the Terrier coaches to get a look at several players—in a game situation—who have seen little or ice time. Head Coach Jay Pandolfo indicated last Friday that newly-rostered goalie Max Lacroix might see some action.

Lane Hutson assisted on Cutter Gauthier’s third-period game-winner as Team USA rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to edge Finland, 3-2, and move on to the gold-medal game. They’ll face the host team, Sweden, in today’s final at 1:30 p.m. ET.
Hutson, who was selected as one of the three U.S. top players in the tournament, has six points—all assists—and is +6. In the semifinal win, Hutson has 25:12 TOI, one second fewer than his defense partner, Ryan Chesley.
Host team Sweden punched its ticket to the championship game by defeating Czechia, 5-2. Tom Willander assisted on the fourth goal and was +3 for the game. At +11 for the tournament, he is the co-leader for Sweden.
One Terrier will come back to Boston with gold and one will return with silver.

►@BUHockeyStats tweeted that there will be Terriers on both teams in the WJC Final for just the 2nd time ever and the 1st since 2017. In 2017, Dante Fabbro manned the blueline for Canada, while the gold-medal-winning Team USA featured six Terriers: Kiefer Bellow, Jordan Greenway, Patrick Harper, Clayton Keller, Charlie McAvoy and Jake Oettinger.
Jack Parker/50 encore
Hopefully you all have read The Boston Hockey Blog’s in-depth feature article: “Fifty years later: The improbable beginning to Jack Parker’s legendary BU career,” which we posted on December 21. It also was republished by College Hockey News last week.
A new blog contributor, Slik4, shares his own involvement on the legal side of case that enabled Bill Buckton and Peter Marzo to continue their careers at BU and play important roles in the success of Coach Parker’s first squads.
How did a Boston University law student, a Boston College law professor and a Cornell alum play a role in leading to Jack Parker becoming Boston University’s head hockey coach in December 1973?

Boston Hockey Blog’s Belle Fraser has written an excellent article about how Jack Parker became BU’s head hockey coach 50 years ago last month following the firing of Leon Abbott. But there’s a small part of the story that she didn’t know about.
In just over one season, Abbott’s BU teams won 26 of the 34 games with him behind the bench, but that record came with an asterisk. Eleven of those victories during the 1972-73 season became forfeits when the NCAA and ECAC of which BU then was a member found BU’s freshman forward Dick Decloe to have been ineligible to play in those games.
Decloe’s eligibility to play at BU was taken away due to his having received subsidies from his amateur club in Canada while he was playing junior hockey and living away from his home. Neither Decloe nor his family knew that his club had paid for those expenses, but the NCAA didn’t care. The NCAA considered those subsidies to have been an illegal impediment to playing college hockey at an NCAA school.
Looking ahead
2025 or 2026 recruit Jay Feldberg has been selected for the OJHL Top Prospects game set for Jan. 13 in Collingswood, Ont. A right-shot center, Feldberg has 10-16-26 line in 34 games for the Toronto Jr. Canadians.
Five other BU recruits will play in top prospects games this month: 2024 recruits Kamil Bednarik, Cole Eiserman and Cole Hutson will play in the USHL’s Jan. 15 Chipotle All-American Game; and 2024 recruit Jack Pridham and 2025 recruit Cal Hughes will play in the Jan. 19 BCHL Top Prospects Game.
Looking back
Jake Oettinger is one of four Terriers named to the 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend in Toronto. He's joined on the Western Conference roster by Jack Eichel and Clayton Keller, while Brady Tkachuk will represent the Eastern Conference. Fan voting will determine additional all-stars.

Returning to the Bruins’ line-up after being sidelined a second time this season due to an injury, Matt Grzelcyk spoke with BHB’s Belle Fraser for The Hockey News. The two-time All-American talked about his game, his goals for the second half and being paired with a fellow Terrier captain and All-American, Kevin Shattenkirk.
