The Terriers’ attempt to win the Women’s Beanpot championship for the first time since 2019 was stymied when defending champion Northeastern scored 27 seconds into overtime to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
The
championship game, played for the first time at TD Garden, drew a crowd of
10,633, the largest ever to attend a women’s hockey game in New England, as
well as the most to view a BU women’s game.
tw-align-centerI hope this is coming through on TV. This crowd is loud and amazing. We don’t have official numbers yet, but I think it definitely surpassed expectations. pic.twitter.com/oPNgLShZ4U

Following a
scoreless first period, BU had better offensive chances in the middle period,
but couldn’t put one past NU’s Gwyneth Philips. With less than a minute in the
period, NU’s Skylar Irving carried the puck off the left boards, drove to the
slot and beat Callie Shanahan low to the glove side.
BU headed totthe third period, seeking an equalizer. Despite being limited to four shots by NU, they got it with 58 ticks left on the clock. Nadia Mattivi kept the puck in the Huskies’ zone at the right point and moved the puck to Sydney Healy in the right circle. Her cross ice pass found Catherline Foulem in the left circle for a quick wrister that sailed past Phillips to knot the score and send the game to overtime.

And that’s where the thrill of tying the game abruptly was replaced by the agony of defeat. On the rush, Irving got behind a BU defender, collected a pass and from the slot fired the puck past Shahanan on the very first shot of overtime.
Frustratingly for BU, it was the fourth tightly-contested loss to Northeastern this season.
With their three-game winning streak snapped, the Terriers will look to bounce back in a home-and-home series against Holy Cross that will figure in the schools' Turnpike Trophy competition.

Renewal of the Battle of Comm. Ave.
As noted earlier this week, the upcoming home-and-home with Boston College marks the first time the Terriers and Eagles have met as the #1 and #2 teams in Division 1.
But as @BUHockeyStats tweeted, "There have been 26 Top-10 Battles of Comm Ave,
BC leads those 13-11-2, however BU leads top-5 match-ups 3-1. (Note: this is since USCHO began its weekly polls.)
The most recent of the match-ups when both schools were in the top five came on November 7, 2014, when the #5 Terriers defeated the #3 Eagles, 5-3 behind two goals from Evan Rodrigues and one each from Jack Eichel, Mike Moran and Nik Olsson. It marked Coach David Quinn's first win against BU's top rival.
The Terriers and Eagles aren't just #1 and #2 in the national rankings, they're together atop the Hockey East standings with BU currently six points ahead.
