Draft day arrives; Hockey East expands

With the NHL’s entry draft beginning tonight, nine Terrier recruits are among the 88 NHL Central Scouting-ranked players  currently in college or committed to a school. Of the nine, Sam Kurker (#36) and Robbie Baillargeon (#50) (photo) attended the NHL’s combine last month and are considered potential early- round selections.

College Hockey Prospective had completed its rollout of the top 60 college prospects for the draft ranked Kurker #9 and Baillargeon #12. Also on its list: Kevin Duane (38), Doyle Somerby (48) Matthew Lane (54), Danny O’Regan (55) . The other BU recruits ranked by Central Scouting are Brendan Collier, Matt Grzelcyk and Sean Maguire.

The Vancouver Canucks have prepared a video of British Columbia natives who are eligible for today’s draft, including 2012 recruit goalie Maguire, who can be seen at the 2:42 mark.

Four members of the 2011-2012 squad were named to the Hockey East All-Academic team: Ross Gaudet, Ryan Ruikka, Grant Rollheiser and Anthony Moccia. In addition, the Terriers were one of only seven D1 schools to achieve a perfect score in the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the entire four-year cohort ending with the 2010-11 academic year. The APR  includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation.

► As expected, Hockey East will become a 12-team conference with Connecticut accepting an invitation to join. Because the Atlantic Hockey conference, UConn’s current home, requires two years notice for departures, the Huskies will play their first Hockey East season in 2014-15. Notre Dame joins the conference for the 2013-14 season.
