Where future Terriers will be skating; Women announce freshman class

2021 recruit Wilmer is one of six North Jersey Avalanche players to commit to BU in the past two years. He will be with the NTDP U18s this season (along with forward Tyler Boucher and defenseman Roman Schmidt). Forward Quinn Hutson, a top scorer on the Avs’ 18U last season, will play for Penticton in the BCHL (along with recent commit Tristan Amonte).

Four others were teammates on the Avs 16U’s last season: defenseman Lane Hutson (photo) and LW Devin Kaplan will skate with the NTDP U17s. Goalie Anton Castro joins USHL Fargo and recent commit forward Jack Musa will be at Trinity-Pawling.

Six other recruits will play juniors this season. After four seasons at St. Sebastian’s, forward Liam Connors joins BCHL Trail Smoke Eaters. Center Ryan Greene, who split last season between Selects Academy and USHL Green Bay, returns to the Gamblers.

Forward Brian Carrabes (photo) will begin a second season with USHL Sioux CIty. Blueliner Charles-Alexis Legault, son of former Terrier Alex Legault, will skate for USHL Muskegon. Forward Michael La Starza, who committed to BU on a week ago, was tendered by Waterloo after two seasons at Shattuck St. Mary's.

2021 (or 2022) recruit Doug Grimes (photo) will be skating for USHL Cedar Rapids this season after his breakout season at Dexter Southfield. Coached by former Terrier Dan Donato, he tripled his previous season’s total with 48 points (23G,25A) in 30 games. A 6’3”, right-shot forward, Grimes was taken at #15 overall by the Roughriders in the Phase 2 USHL draft. Speaking on the OTB Podcast, Donato said:

“Doug is a great two-way player who has great size and can really shoot the puck. He has the ability to change a game by his physicality and has a great touch around the net. His best days are ahead of him as he continues to grow into his 6’3, 210 pound frame.”

►Jerome Berube, head scout for HockeyProspect.com, tweeted that Montreal native LaStarza is the "3rd Quebec prospect to commit to BU in the past year" after goalie Vincent Duplessis (2020) and Legault (2021)

Looking back

Charlie Coyle scored an unassisted goal (video) and Charlie McAvoy added an assist in the Bruins’ 4-3 overtime win over Carolina. Matt Grzelcyk nearly broke a 2-2 deadlock when his shot hit both the post and crossbar, but stayed out of the net.

Joel Farabee converted the rebound of his own tip attempt (video) with five minutes left in regulation to lift the Flyers to a 2-1 win against Montreal.

Emergence of Fabbro: Defenseman Dante Fabbro, the No. 17 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, provided stability in a top-four role for Nashville during the regular season, averaging 19:02 of ice time per game. He continued to gain [John] Hynes' trust in the Qualifiers, averaging 20:35 and leading the Predators with 12 blocked shots in the postseason. He was fifth among NHL rookies with 85 blocked shots in 64 regular-season games.

Women’s Team

Coach Brian Durocher has announced a seven-member freshman class for 2020-21, which features four defenders and three forwards. The blueline group—Andi Calderone, Madison Cardaci, Tamara Giaquinto, Julia Shaunessy—includes two with BU hockey connections. Calderone is the younger sister of defender Alex Calderone, who completed her four-year career as a Terrier in 2019-20. Shaunessy is the daughter of Terrier standout defenseman Scott Shaunessy, a Hockey East All-Star in 1985-86, who helped BU win its first conference tournament title. His eight-year professional career included seven games with the NHL Quebec Nordiques. Julia’s uncle, Steve Shaunessy, also played D for BU.

The new forwards are  Catherine Foulem, Lacey Martin and Claire O'Leary.
