Coach Albie O'Connell has announced the leadership group for the 2021-22 season, headed by Captain Logan Cockerill. The New York Islanders draft pick, who is BU's first two-year captain since Matt Grzelcyk, is taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ty Amonte and Max Kaufman are again assistant captains, joined by Alex Vlasic. Amonte was granted a medical red-shirt year after missing last season with an injury, while Kaufman, who had transferred to BU from Vermont, also is taking the extra year.

Looking ahead
BU has received its third commitment from an ’05 player since the current signing period began—and its fourth overall—as Kai Janviriya, a right-shot defenseman from Bloomfield, Mich., signed on with the Terriers. He’ll spend the next two seasons with the USNTDP having made the U17s roster, joining prior BU commits Ryan Fine, a forward from Mid-Fairfield Rangers, and goalie Michael Chambre, from Florida Alliance.
According to a well-placed source, Janviriya, who was listed at 5’6” at NTDP evaluation camp, made his final choice between BU and Michigan.
Janviriya spent last season with Compuware’s 15UAA team after several seasons with Belle Tire. He also was an invitee to the World Sections Invitational in his 12, 13 and 14 years and has trained with Total Package Hockey (TPH).

NEHJ’s Jeff Cox reported the signing of Janviriya, whom he described as “a small, offensive-minded defenseman with a good stick. He’s a high risk, high reward breakout defenseman.”
In a March 2020 article about top Americans eligible for the 2021 OHL draft, Prospect Pipeline wrote: “Capable of rushing the puck up ice in the blink of an eye, Janviriya features the confidence and vision necessary to orchestrate high-end offensive plays in his attacking zone.” [The article also profiles Ryan Fine].
His coaches at TPH report that “Kai is a fierce competitor with an unparalleled commitment to the game. He has a high hockey maturity level and it shows through his play on the ice.”
BU recently received a commitment for 2023 from another ’05 defenseman, Gavin McCarthy, brother of Case McCarthy, who has tendered to USHL Muskegon. NTDP U18 defenseman Lane Hutson, a 2004 birthdate, also is lined up to arrive in 2023.
