New pups: Incoming classes announced


Head Coach Jay Pandolfo has announced a six-man freshman class as well the promotion of a practice squad goalie to the team roster, providing comments on each one. 

Patrick Schena spent the 2021-22 season as the Terriers’ practice goaltender and worked with goaltending coach Brian Daccord during games. The 6’1” graduate student from Medford, Mass., previously played at Division 3 University of New England and with the New Jersey Rockets. He prepped at Phillips Exeter.

The freshman class features four forwards and two defensemen. The forwards are Ryan Greene, Quinn Hutson, Devin Kaplan and Jeremy Wilmer, while Lachlan Getz and Lane Hutson are the new blueliners. (Names linked to bios).

Three of the newcomers were selected in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft: Greene, #57 by Chicago, Lane Hutson, #62 by Montreal and Kaplan, #69 by Philadelphia. Greene (Green Bay), Quinn Hutson (Muskegon) and Wilmer (Tri-City) each led his USHL team in scoring last season. Wilmer led the league with 98 points and set a USHL record with 70 assists, earning Forward of the Year honors.

Lane Hutson's 63 points for the NTDP U18s was second most by a defenseman in program history. His U18 teammate, Kaplan, had 44 points.

"We have six freshmen and I think all of them are ready to contribute to the team right away,” said Pandolfo. “Obviously, we're going to have to see them in practice, but based off of where they're coming from and what I know of them, I think they're going to make an impact right away which will be huge for our team."

He also indicated that Wilmer and Lane Hutson would be candidates for ice time on the power play.

While the Terriers celebrated the program’s 100th season in 2021-22, the BU Band will mark its own centennial this season with a recognition event scheduled for the Oct. 21 game against Connecticut.   

 

Looking ahead

The Hockey News’ Ryan Kennedy’s early ranking for the 2023 NHL Entry Draft has 2023 recruit Gavin McCarthy at #39. The 6’1”, 170-pound right-shot defenseman, who will begin his second USHL season with Muskegon, earned strong reviews for his performance with the U.S. Under 18 Select Team in the Hlinka Gretzky Cup earlier this month. The younger brother of Terrier assistant captain Case McCarthy, he earned third star honors in two of the five games, despite registering just one assist.  A Draft Prospects Hockey scout wrote:

Strong, puck-moving defenseman with confidence in his breakout passes. Displayed solid composure handling the puck and setting up the transition. Skates with his head up assessing his options regularly. An accurate passer in both short- and long-range distances. Has some quick hands that he’ll use to deke defenders 1v1. Uses his active stick well to poke at the puck and keep his man to the outside. Defends entries with a tight gap control and will use his body to eliminate players from the play.

Looking back

Former Terrier defenseman Chad Krys is heading across the pond to play for the Vienna Capitals of the IceHL. A 2016 Blackhawks second-round draft pick, he’d been traded to Toronto a year ago and played 36 games for the AHL Marlies. In three seasons on the BU blueline, he had a 20-39-58 scoring line. His father, Mark Krys, captained the 1991 national finalist squad.

Former Terrier Trevor Zegras, now with the Anaheim Ducks, and Team Canada’s Sarah Nurse are featured on the cover of EA Sports’ NHL23.


Women’s Team

Coach Brian Durocher announced seven newcomers, including two transfer, to the women’s roster for 2022-23. Highlighting the group are: defenseman Brooke Disher who captained Team Canada’s gold-medal IIHF U18 squad; forward Clara Yuhn, who captained Little Caesars 19U to back-to-back national championships; and Swiss goalie Andrea Braendli, a graduate transfer from Ohio State who helped the Buckeyes win last year’s national championship and who owns the OSU program record for wins. She also represented Switzerland in the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

Also heading to Walter Brown Arena are: goalie Allie Cuellar, defenseman Maeve Kelly, and forwards Ani Fitzgerald and Sydney Healy.
