Matt Brown deals; Mike Sullivan extended by Pens

Senior forward Matt Brown joined the Everything College Hockey crew for their latest “Pucks In Deep” podcast, discussing why he transferred to BU, the new head coach, his first Beanpot, favorite BU uniform, favorite post-game venues, the upcoming season and more. (Begins at the 20:00 mark).

This WTBU Sports article sneaked past us last May, so we’re posting it now. Just after Jay Pandolfo was named BU’s 13th head coach, Patrick Donnelly spoke at length with Athletic Director Drew Marrochello about the search process he’d pursued. In the conversation, Marrochello revealed some of the insights and reasoning that led him to decide that the former Terrier captain was the right fit.

Looking back

Former BU captain and Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan received a three-year extension that runs through the 2026-27 season. The 54-year-old native of Marshfield, Mass., who captained the Terriers' 1990 Frozen Four squad, has been Pittsburgh's head coach since December 2015 and guided the Pens to Stanley Cup titles in 2016 and 2017. He also was a player development coach for the Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks in 2015.

Where are they now?

Former BU goalie Bob Deraney is entering his third season as head coach at Division 3 Worcester State.  Previously, he spent 19 seasons as the head coach of the Providence College women’s program, leading the Friars to three Hockey East titles and becoming the winningest coach in the conference.

In three seasons as a Terrier, Deraney had a 21-12-3 record and helped BU win its first Hockey East championship in 1986. After graduation he became an assistant coach for Northeastern’s men’s program followed by assistant roles at Dartmouth and Massachusetts.
