For its much-anticipated New Year’s Eve clash with Canada, Team USA climbed aboard the “Cole Train,” as Mark Linehan would say, to claim a 4-1 win, clinching the top spot in the A Division at the World Junior Championships in Ottawa. Cole Eiserman and Cole Hutson each tallied a power-play goal and an assist to pace the offense.

Moments after he rang a shot off the post, Hutson’s power-play goal, assisted by Eiserman, gave the U.S. a lead early in the first period--and offered an "I can't hear you" celly to the Ottawa crowd.

After Canada tied the game early in the third period, the U.S. regained the lead with another power-play goal. Watch how Hutson mesmerizes all four Canadian skaters to set up Danny Nelson for the eventual game-winner.

Late in the period, Eiserman connected for a third U.S. man-advantage tally. After Eiserman’s first attempt was blocked, Hutson retrieved the puck and sent it to the Newburyport, Mass., native for a rocket past Carter George.

The U.S. finishes the preliminary round with a 3-1-0 record and is the top seed from the A Division. Undefeated Sweden (4-0-0) wins the B Division.

Hutson (2-6-8) is tied for the tournament scoring lead and also is tied for the plus-minus lead with +7. Eiserman (2-4-6) is tied for sixth in scoring. Tom Willander (2-3-5) is tied for 15th and is +5.  Brandon Svoboda has a 1-2-3 scoring line.

Cole Eiserman spoke on his emphatic celebration that saw him go at Team Canada’s Easton Cowan while Cowan was sitting in the penalty box.

“It’s definitely something I thought about before it happened. Eighteen thousand fans all rooting against you. I think that’s just a classic one you’ve got to pull.”
