Freshman Cole Hutson was named Hockey East Defender of the Week after registering a goal and two assists in the Terriers' sweep of New Hampshire.

In Friday's 6-3 victory, he assisted on his brother Quinn Hutson's power play goal in the second period. Then, in the third period he made jaws drop on an unassisted power play goal that earned the #2 spot on SportsCenter's Top 10.

In Saturday's game, he teed up Cole Eiserman's game-tying one-timer.

Hutson extended his point-scoring streak to five game. His 10 points (3G,7A) over that stretch account for half of his season total of 20, which leads all Hockey East defensemen. Nationally, he is sixth among blueliners and second among rookie Ds. His 1.00 points per game are tied for the best mark among D1 defensemen.

Poll story

Following their second consecutive weekend sweep, Terriers move up three slots to #8 in the USCHO D1 Men's Poll. There are six Hockey East teams in the top 13, beginning with next weekend's opponent, #1 BC. Maine and Providence each slipped one spot to 6th and 7th respectively. Lowell, upset by Stonehill, fell to 12, while UConn moved up to #13. UNH remains in the top 20 at #18.

In the USA Hockey/The Rink Live Weekly Poll, BU moved up as well but only to #9. The same six conference teams are in the top 13, but with UConn at #12 and Lowell at #13.

John Buccigross' ranking has the Terriers at #6, while Everything College Hockey's ranking puts BU at #11.

Terriers remain in the eighth spot in the latest Pairwise rankings which also have #1 BC, #6 Maine, #7 Providence, #9 UConn, #13 Lowell, #16 New Hampshire, #18 Northeastern, #19 UMass and #24 Merrimack.

The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler has ranked Tom Willander at #2 in the Vancouver Canucks’ prospect pool. He writes:

He’s a strong-in-all-three-zones defenseman who plays a confident and decisive defensive game that uses his beautiful, balanced skating to swallow up opposing carriers and then push forward or fall back onto his heels and outlet the puck.
He pulls away or retreats from pressure with ease, and excels on exits and going back to get pucks. His head is always up. He gets his shots through. And then, on top of the pro frame, the skating and the general athleticism, he also just plays the game with an intentionality that’s rare in players his age. He looks and operates like a pro out there. His passes are quick and firm. He activates when he can and picks his spots. Defensively, he’s aggressive on pinches and closing gaps, and rarely mistimes them, taking away the space so well in neutral ice. He made some mistakes that showed his youth at times as a freshman but he has looked back to his polished self this season. Willander doesn’t have dynamic skill or creativity on the puck, and his offensive-zone instincts are still coming, but he projects safely as an NHL defenseman and could become a two-way transition monster in a top-four role. Because of how high a level he defends and skates at, he rarely has bad games and play normally tilts in his team’s favor. And even though the offense doesn’t always pop inside the offensive zone, he’s a comfortable puck mover and transporter. He’s going to have a long career as a No. 3-4.

SNL (Saturday Night Leftovers)

Mathieu Caron owns a .933 save percentage during the Terriers' four-game win streak to open 2025.  With his assist on Ryan Greene's overtime goal, Caron is the second BU goalie since 2002-03 with three or more points.

After winning nine of 12 draws Saturday night, Brandon Svoboda leads the team in faceoff percentage with 55.9.

BU has killed 17 of the last 18 penalties in the last five Hockey East games.

With three power-play goals in eight attempts, BU is now fourth nationally and second in Hockey East at .280 (23 of 82).

Blog contributor defkit notes the similar between Greene’s celly and that of another #9.

Looking back

Charlie Coyle scored twice in the third period--the tying and game-winning goals-- and added an assist as the Bruins doubled up the Sharks, 6-3. Macklin Celebrini was scoreless in his return to Boston.

Jack Eichel scored his 12th goal (video), then assisted on a game-tying goal to rally Vegas from a 4-2 deficit, but St. Louis triumphed in the shootout, 5-4. Eichel also had the Golden Knight's only tally in the shootout. With 58 points, he is eighth in the league while his 46 assists rank fourth.
