UPDATED Terriers edge Cornell to claim Red Hot Hockey #12

Cole Eiserman, a first-round draft pick in 2024 by the New York Islanders, is certain to score a bunch of goals at Madison Square Garden over the next five or ten seasons when the Isles come to visit the Rangers. But his very first MSG goal is one he--and Terrier Nation--will long remember.

His blast from the right circle at 5:24 of the third period beat the Big Red's Alexis Cournoyer high to his stick side to break a 1-1 tie and send BU to a 2-1 win in the 10th edition of Red Hot Hockey.  With the victory, the Kelley-Harkness Trophy, named for legendary BU and Cornell head coaches, returns to Commonwealth Avenue for the first time since 2015.

While BU has had Cornell's number in recent meetings in the NCAA Regionals and at Agganis Arena, the Big Red had been on a four-game winning streak at the MSG event. The Red Hot Hockey series now is tied at 4-4-2.

Eiserman, who also had the primary assist on BU's first-period power-play goal, was named the game's first star. The second star--could've been tied for first--went to sophomore goalie Mikhail Yegorov, who stopped 28 of 29 shots, including a bunch of grade A/high danger attempts by the Big Red, displaying the same skill, agility and quick glove that propelled BU to the Beanpot title and to the national championship game last season.

Coach Jay Pandolfo, Eiserman and Yegorov addressed the media after the game. Click here to listen.

Closing the game out was anything but easy for BU. After Cornell pulled Cournoyer for an extra skater with just over two minutes left in regulation, a very questionable slashing call on Jonathan Morello created a 6-on-4 for nearly two minutes.

During the 6-on-4, BU defensemen Gavin McCarthy, Charlie Trethewey and Cole Hutson made strong plays to send the puck the length of the ice. Hutson's clearing play barely missed going into the empty Big Red goal.

Cornell's aggressive forecheck kept the puck in BU's end during the opening minutes and led to a Big Red power play, which the Terriers killed. Then, when BU had its first man-advantage, it took just nine seconds to cash in. Terriers won the draw and McCarthy passed to Eiserman in virtually the same spot as his eventual game-winner. His slap-pass to the crease was redirected home by Kamil Bednarik who had staked out a spot behind the defense. It was the sophomore center's third goal.

BU played some of its best hockey after taking the lead, but still was outshot 11-6 for the period.

Cornell ratcheted up the pressure in the second period, keeping the puck in the BU zone for long periods, forcing some of Big Mike's best saves of the evening. Cornell finally put one past him at the 15:00 mark. A weak clearing attempt by BU led to two quick shots by Cornell. Yegorov stopped the first one, but on the second, by Reegan Hiscock, he had no chance.

Shots for the period were 12-6 Cornell.

Both teams tightened up defensively as the final period began. Just over five minutes in, freshman Charlie Trethewey collected a loose puck just outside of the BU blueline and quick head-manned the puck to Eiserman who skated into the right circle and rifled a hard-angle shot past Cournoyer. The tally not only restored BU's lead but it ended a four game drought for last season's top rookie goal-scorer with 25. He now has seven.

Terrier penalties gave Cornell three power plays in the period, including the one in the last two minutes. BU's penalty killers were superb, allowing just one shot on goal, although Cornell's Hoyt Stanley rang a shot off the crossbar with just over a minute left in regulation.

Final shots were 29-17 in favor of Cornell. BU killed all four penalties it took and converted on one of three power plays.

Terriers and Cornell face off in Red Hot Hockey #10

#19/20 Terriers take on #16//17 Cornell in the 10th iteration of Red Hot Hockey at Madison Square Garden tonight. Puck drop is at 8 p.m. ET with ESPN+ providing a live stream of the game.

While BU has ended the Big Red's seasons in NCAA Regionals in 2023 and 2025, those wins sandwiched a 2-1 loss in the 2023 Red Hot Hockey. BU trails Cornell in the RHH series 3-4-2 and has lost the last four decisions. The last three games between the teams have all been by one-goal margins. Last season's Toledo regional final was a 3-2 BU win with Quinn Hutson's point shot in overtime sending BU back to the Frozen Four.

Under first-year head coach Casey Jones, Cornell is 6-2-0 plays the same defensively stingy and physical  style as it did under Mike Schafer. They are coming off wins against RPI (6-1) and Union (2-1)

Junior Ryan Walsh and sophomore Charlie Major lead the Big Red attack with 10 and seven points respectively, followed by Johnathan Castagna and Caton Ryan with six apiece.

Junior George Fagara and sophomore Michael Fischer anchor an experienced defense while freshman goalie Alexis Cournoyea brings a microscopic 1.30 GAA and a .953 GAA.

2027 recruit Brady Knowling's 42-save performance led Team USA to a 4-2 win over the CHL in first game of the CHL-USA Prospects Challenge in Calgary. The NTDP U18s' Jamie Glance, also a 2027 recruit, was a factor throughout displaying speed and a wicked shot that rang iron. His 65-foot empty-netter clinched the win. 2026 recruit Luke Schairer, a 6'3" right-shot defenseman, played a strong two-way game and assisted on Team USA's second goal.

Knowling, a dual U.S.-Canadian citizen who committed to BU in October, earned Player of the Game honors.

Five-⭐️prospect Caleb Malhotra put on a passing show for Team CHL, which he captained, and set up their first goal with a slick maneuver.

UPDATE: The Athletic on Malhotra

The bright spots for Team CHL

I thought captain Caleb Malhotra was Canada’s best player (particularly in the second game, where he was excellent) and that Remparts forward Maddox Dagenais was their most consistent.

Malhotra played with poise, held onto pucks and found his way out of trouble when many of his teammates didn’t on this stage, which I think is usually telling at these events. His line with Adam Novotny and Mathis Preston, which was put together for the third period of Game 1, was the only one that created good looks for long stretches of both games; Preston’s maneuverability on the puck and Novotny’s strength and competitiveness were both largely positive. Malhotra also made some skill plays. Belchetz is still the top forward prospect from this CHL group for the draft despite his quiet two games, but Malhotra looked like the No. 2.

Prior to the Challenge, Malhotra was the subject of a 2026 NHL Draft prospect profile by Scott Wheeler of The Athletic. A 6'1" center and the second leading rookie scorer in the OHL with a 10-19-29 scoring line for Brantford Bulldogs, he is the son of 16-season NHLer Manny Malhotra and the nephew of two-time NBA champion coach Steve Nash. His skills coach at Brantford, Leland De Langley said:

Malhotra has developed “phenomenal” touch and “great ability to control pucks in tight without losing.” He calls his best attribute — “what separates him and why he’s going to have a long career” — his hockey IQ and the way it allows him to use his technique in pressure situations to make good reads. He lauds his puck protection down low and his work in puck battles as something Malhotra has always had. He’s fundamentally sound, de Langley said, describing him as like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nico Hischier that way, but also with “a little more bite to his game” and the pace, aggression and relentlessness of Sam Bennett, another of his clients.

2026 recruit Tynan Lawrence, also a 5-⭐️ prospect, returned to the Muskegon lineup after missing all but two prior games and scored a goal and added an assist in the Lumberjacks' 6-4 win over the NTDP U17s. 2027 recruit Carter Meyer had an assist for Team USA.

Tom Willander recorded his fourth and fifth assists in Vancouver''s 5-4 win over the Ducks.

UPDATED: Defender of the Week for McCarthy; Poll Story; SNL; Early & Often Greer; Goaltender of the Week for Pietersen

 Image

Terrier captain Gavin McCarthy's standout efforts against Northeastern have earned Hockey East's Defender of the Week honors. A third-round selection by Buffalo in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, McCarthy led all conference skaters with eight blocks and was +3. He assisted on both of his defense partner Cole Hutson's goals in Saturday's win, out-muscling two Huskies to send Hutson away for the game-winner.

For the season, he leads all Terriers with +10 and has a 2-4-6 scoring line with a team-high 23 blocks. Earlier in the month, McCarthy was rostered to the U.S. Collegiate Selects squad that will compete for the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland from Dec. 25-31.

GoTerriers.com McCarthy Named Hockey East Defender of the Week

Two Terriers were named to Hockey East's Weekly Top Performers list:

Cole Hutson, BU (So., D; Chicago, Ill.) Had two goals in a weekend series with Northeastern. Hutson potted both of his goals in Saturday night’s 4-3 overtime win over the Huskies, including the overtime strike. Hutson also blocked four shots.
He was the only Hockey East defenseman to score two goals over the weekend.

Jonathan Morello, BU (Fr., F; Toronto, Ont.) Registered one point on one goal in a weekend series with Northeastern. He scored BU’s sixth shorthanded goal of the season in Saturday’s win. It was his second shorthanded tally of the year, tying him for the conference lead in shorthanded goals this season.

Poll Story

Image

Following the weekend split with Northeastern, BU slipped one spot in the USCHO Division 1 Poll, now sitting at #19. Cornell, who is next Saturday's opponent for Red Hot Hockey at Madison Square Garden, moved up two slots to #17 following home wins against Union and RPI.

Michigan takes over the #1 ranking after Michigan State, now #3, was swept by Wisconsin.  The three highest ranked Hockey East teams are #10 Maine, #11 Northeastern and #12 Connecticut.

In the USA Hockey Poll, BU sits at #20, down one slot. Cornell is #16.

More post-game comments from Coach Jay Pandolfo:

"I thought we played a more simple game. We were winning more pucks all over the ice.  Just being more competitive on pucks. We were playing below their goal line and winning pucks. Being able to sustain offensive pressure. I thought it was better last night (Friday), too. We were even better tonight. We were getting to the net. If we’re willing to play that way, it’s going to be a lot more fun.

"Roukou--He’s so strong on the puck and he moves so well. He can separate, he makes plays. He takes pucks to the net on his own. We need more of that, guys willing to go to the net. He brings a little bit of a different identity to the team.

"That line, Morello, Merrill and Roukounakis, they’re a lot to handle. They were all excellent tonight."

He also reported that Kamil Bednarik was injured late in Friday’s game and it was determined he wasn’t recovered enough by Saturday’s game time.

Another player who earned kudos from Pandolfo was Mick Frechette whose 14:20 of ice time was the most for him this season.

In case you missed it, BU’s first goal in Friday’s game, originally credited to Frechette, was changed to John McNelis, who tipped home the shot for his first career goal. McNelis also had numerous other scoring chances including a penalty shot.

Terriers blocked 16 NU shots--six by McCarthy--Saturday and, for the most part, kept the Huskies away from the BU crease area. One exception was the power-play goal BU yielded with 2.7 seconds left in the opening period.

Terriers now have six shorthanded goals overall—one behind national leader Michigan— and three in Hockey East games.

With Tonight's win, Pandolfo moves into sole possession of 5th place on the Terrier coaches' all-time list with 87. He passed Wayland Vaughn (1928-40, 1941-43) and trails David Quinn by 18 wins.

2027 or 2028 recruit Andrei Nikolaev stopped 23 of 24 shots in a 50-minute relief effort as the New Jersey Titans doubled up Elmira, 6-3, on Saturday in NAHL action.

On Friday night, the 6-4 goalie from Moscow turned aside 24 of 26 shots in a Titans’ 3-2 win over the Aviators.

The wins improved Nikolaev’s record to 8-4-1 and his GAA to 2.57. His save percentage is .917.

TSN’s Craig Button has updated his top 64 projections for the 2026 NHL Entry Draft. 2026 Terrier recruits included are #9 Tynan Lawrence, who has only played two games due to an injury), #16 Caleb Malhotra (photo), #17 Egor Shilov, #42 Braidy Wassilyn, and #63 Luke Schairer

Looking back

AJ Greer scored a pair of goals--to equal his career best of six--and added an assist as Florida routed Nashville, 8-3. With his father in the stands, Greer put in a sharp-angle shot just 11 seconds into the game. He wired home his second from the high slot in the third period. Greer finished the game +5.  Evan Rodrigues also connected in the first period (video) for his sixth goal and assisted on Greer's second tally.

Macklin Celebrini scored his 14th goal and added an assist in the surging Sharks’ 3-1 win against the Bruins. With 34 points in 23 games, he’s second in the NHL in points.

Congrats to Alex Vlasic, who has a 9-45-54 career scoring line and is a strong candidate for Team USA in February’s Olympic games in Milan and Cortina.
