Lost weekend

A dynamic ice hockey scene with a Maine Black Bears player in a white and navy jersey numbered 16 wearing a helmet and holding a stick, kneeling and celebrating on the ice with arms raised, while a Boston University player in a red jersey stands nearby. Teammates in similar uniforms are visible in the background. The scoreboard displays BU 5 and Maine 8 with FINAL indicated.

The #5 Terriers series with #12 Maine started with a lost-opportunity overtime loss and concluded with a dispiriting 8-5 loss that wasn't as close as the score would indicate.

BU got on the board just 36 ticks into the game on Ben Merrill's second tally of the weekend. But eerily similar to Friday's contest, Maine responded on the very next sequence. The Black Bears would add two more goals in the opening period, putting the Terriers in a hole from which they never would escape.

Let's let the 13 goals tell the story.

Following the Black Bears' third goal, goalie Mikhail Yegorov was replaced by Max Lacroix.   3-1 Maine after one. Shots: BU 12, Maine 10.

To begin a six-goal second period, Brandon Svoboda cut into the lead with a slick tip-in.

Kamil Bednarik and Jonathan Morello combined for a shorty.

On the same power play as Bednarik's shorthander, Max Scott restored the two-goal margin.

Charlie Russell's second goal of the game extended Maine's lead to 6-3 and would prove to be the game-winner. No video located...yet.

Three goals for each team in the second period. Maine poured 23 shots on goal to just eight for BU.

A Maine penalty to open the third gave BU an opportunity to narrow the lead, but a Maine shorthander by Scott closed that door. No video...yet.

Then, with BU on the penalty kill, Svoboda notched his second of the game with a shorthander.

BU would get no closer. An empty-net goal by Oscar Komorov concluded the fireworks.
