USA Today ranks Terriers 14th

In a sure sign that the college hockey season is just around the corner, the first national rankings came out today. BU, coming off a season that saw them finish third in the Hockey East regular season, but fail to return to the NCAAs, is ranked #14 in the preseason USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine men's poll. The Terriers are one spot behind their season-opening opponent, Wisconsin, whom they'll face in the Warrior IceBreaker Tournament on Oct. 8.

In his Sunday Hockey Notes column, The Boston Globe’s Kevin Dupont reports that :

Boston University coaching legend Jack Parker continues to recover from heart surgery he had over the summer. If he needs a night off behind the Terrier bench this season, associate coach Mike Bavis will handle the duties, accompanied by Pertti Hasanen, who is back on Commonwealth Ave. again after pursuing other business.

Earlier this year we reported that Hasanen, a former Terrier assistant coach, has launched Hasanen Power Wear, an innovative company committed to developing safe and functional weighted training gear. In May, USA Hockey announced that Hasanen Power Wear will serve as its official weighted training gear sponsor and will provide sets of its training equipment to USA Hockey's National Team Development Program.

Al Daniels of the Beyond The Dashers blog profiles freshman Marie-Philip Poulin, gold medal winner at the Vancouver Olympics and describes how, thanks to an influx of high-profile talent, The Battle of Commonwealth Ave. now extends to BU’s and BC’s women’s program.

USCHO posted its preseason women's hockey poll with the Terriers ranked #6. Earlier this month they were picked first by Hockey East coaches in the conference preseason poll.

What made this the right time to begin your professional career?
“I think just in talking to coach (Jack) Parker back at school, he said he felt it was time to go. And I knew myself that it was time to go. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity, but you don’t want to rush it. You don’t really know when it is, but I just kind of felt after the season that this was the jump I wanted to make. Hopefully it will turn out for the best.”

All event proceeds will support Autism Speaks’ work to increase awareness about the growing autism epidemic, fund innovative autism research and family services, and advocate for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.

His first goal came in the tournament opener against the Penguins— and his BU teammate and roommate Brian Strait—in a 5-3 loss. According to SilverSevenSens.com:

Eric Gryba: Okay, maybe not a guy you were initially looking to hear about, but someone who Bryan Murray is high on, and who scored a sick goal: Pinched in and called for a pass at the opposition blue line, faked out the defender, and rifled a shot far-side past [former Northeastern University goalie Brad] Thiessen.

Gryba scored again in the Sens’ game two 7-3 win over the Blackhawk rookies. In the third tournament game, a 3-2 Senators’ win, the blueliner from Saskatoon handled himself well in a fight with a Leafs’ forward (photo).

The last holdout

On the ninth anniversary of our national tragedy, we remember former Terrier Mark Bavis, who along with former Bruin Ace Baily perished on United Airlines flight 175. Both were scouts for the Los Angeles Kings, heading to the West Coast. As it is for all the families of 9-11 victims, the loss felt by the Bavis family will never be gone. But, as today's New York Times reports, the Bavis family, unlike all the others, still is seeking its day in court, having declined to accept a settlement from the special compensation fund authorized by the U.S. Congress. In this news feature, BU associate head coach Mike Bavis, who is Mark's twin brother, and their mother, Mary, explain why "Settlement has not been in our vocabulary” and what they hope their persistence will achieve.

Meanwhile, a few miles away from Lower Manhattan, Aces Mark, a 6-year old gelding named for Bavis and Bailey, finished second in today's eighth race at Belmont Park. One of the horse's owners is Lew Mongelluzzo, an Ottawa Senators scout and a friend of the Bavis Brothers.
