Team
USA needed a third-period power play goal from Jordan Greenway to edge a
stubborn Swiss squad, 3-2, and gain a berth in the semi-finals of the IIHF
World Junior Championships. The U.S. will play a rematch with Russia (whom the
U.S. beat, 3-2, in the preliminary round) on Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET in
Montreal.
Greenway
followed up his three-point game against Canada with two points in the
quarterfinal victory. Besides his game-winner, the 6’5” left wing had the
primary assist on Team USA’s second goal.
Moments
after the Swiss tied the score early in the third period, the US went on a
power play and controlled the draw. Clayton Keller slid the puck to Charlie
McAvoy at the blueline and the defenseman’s wrist shot was deflected slowly to
the left of the crease. Well-positioned, Greenway used his long reach to flip
the puck into the net for the game-winner.
With
six points overall, Greenway has had a hand in five of his team’s last six
goals (2G,3A). Keller’s eight points
(3G,5A) tops the U.S squad and is third in the tournament.
