A day after receiving the top ranking in the USCHO poll,
BU saw its eight-game winning streak come to a crashing halt as the Terriers
were outhustled, outworked and defeated
by Merrimack, 3-1, at Lawler Rink
Terriers played reasonably well for the game’s first ten
minutes and took a lead when Chad Krys’s shot from the high slot went in off
the post. Clayton Keller and Patrick Harper assisted. But it all went downhill
from there.
By the end of the period, Merrimack had tied the score
when Mathieu Tibbet deflected a Ludvig Larsson shot from just outside the
crease and had grabbed the momentum.
Early In the second period, BU lost sophomore Charlie
McAvoy when the blueliner received a game misconduct following a hit from
behind. After killing the five-minute major BU had a power play opportunity,
but failed to score. Late in the period the Warriors capitalized on a power
play with Logan Coomes redirecting a point shot for a 2-1 lead.
Merrimack extended the lead on another power play early
in the third. With the Warriors on the attack, Connor LaCouvee made two saves,
but BU couldn’t clear the puck and Hamphus Gustafsson banged it home. After
mustering just 13 shots in the first two periods, the Terriers had 18 in the
third, but Colin Delia turned them all away.
.
“We got exactly
what we deserved,” Coach David Quinn
said. “The hungrier, more determined team won the night. They won every puck
battle. They were quick to the puck. More determined. We get down 3-1 and we started playing with a little more
urgency.”
