Former Cornell assistant coach Topher Scott explains why character is an equal part of the equation—with skill—that explains what makes Terrier sophomore and WJC gold medalist Charlie McAvoy a special player. Now with the AHL Syracuse Stars, Scott wrote in his Welcome, Life After Hockey blog about his experiences with the McAvoy family when trying to recruit him to play for the Big Red.

World Junior Championships

McAvoy and Clayton Keller were named to the tournament All-Star Team. Keller led Team USA with 11 points (3G,8A), third best in the tournament. Jordan Greenway was third on Team USA with 8. McAvoy was third among defensemen in the tournament with six.

Looking ahead
2017 recruit Hank Crone’s 11th goal of the season was Fargo’s only tally in a 2-1 loss to Sioux City. With 27 points in 25 games, Crone is tied for sixth in USHL scoring.

2019 recruit Joel Farabee (photo) scored a pair of goals for the NTDP U17s who dropped an 8-3 decision to the Chicago Steel. 2018 recruit Jake Wise assisted on Farabee’s second goal, while 2018 recruit Jack DeBoer assisted on the third U17 goal.  Farabee leads the U17s in scoring with 26 (15G, 11A) points.  Wise is second with 21 (6G, 15A).

Looking back
Matt Nieto has been acquired by the Colorado Avalanche on waivers from San Jose.
A 102 point scorer in three seasons at BU, Nieto has 28 goals and 42 assists for the Sharks over 3+ seasons.  Nieto made his Avs' debut last night in a 2-1 OT win over the Islanders, skating on a line with Jerome Iginla and registering four shots.

Former Terrier Eric Gryba, a member of the 2009 national championship team, and the Edmonton Oilers practiced at Agannis Arena on Friday.

Thanks to the blogger reader who pointed out that former BU captain Garrett Noonan was recently recalled from ECHL Greenville to AHL Hartford.  Noonan rejoins Ahti Oksanen who was recalled to Hartford in December.
