After a four-point weekend in BU’s sweep of Maine, including three assists on Saturday, Macklin Celebrini is the Hockey East Rookie of the Week. The freshman center from North Vancouver extended his point streak to eight game and is the national co-leader in points with 22. Celebrini has recorded multiple points on eight different occasions and is one of just two players to average two points per game this season. He was previously named Hockey East's Player of the Month of October as well as national Rookie of the Month.

Please note that Wednesday's game at Agganis Arena against Quinnipiac begins at 5 p.m.

Poll Story

Terriers moved up three slots from #8 to #5 and received one first-place vote in the USCHO Weekly poll. Wednesday's opponent, defending national champion Quinnipiac, is ranked #3 and received eight first-place votes. Next Saturday's opponent, Cornell, dropped to #16 after suffering defeats at the hands of Quinnipiac and Princeton. Six of the top 12 are Hockey East schools; joining BU are #3 BC, #9 Providence, #10 Maine, #11 UMass and #12 New Hampshire. The new #1 is North Dakota.

The USA Hockey/The Rink Live College Hockey Poll also has BU jumping up to #5. It has North Dakota and BC tied for the top spot, followed by Quinnipiac and Denver.

John Buccigross's ranking has the Terriers at #6, just behind #5 BC.  Everything College Hockey's weekly ranking puts BU at #5 and like the USCHO poll has six Hockey East teams in the top 12.

BHB's Terrier Hockey Talk podcast offers its takeaways from the sweep of Maine as well as from women's team's tough loss to BC.

Belated birthday wishes to Steve Stirling, captain of BU's first national championship team in 1971, who turned 74 yesterday. A first team All-American, he rang up 70 points (27G, 43A) in 31 games for a 2.26 points per game. A college coach at Babson and Providence, Steve remains active as a pro scout for Ottawa.

SNL (Saturday Night Leftovers and Friday's, too)

Friday's crowd included a five-man contingent from the Bruins. Representing Maine were head coach Jim Montgomery, a two-time All-American and captain of the 1993 national champions, and standout goalie Jeremy Swayman. Three All-American defensemen represented BU: Matt Grzelcyk, Charlie McAvoy and Kevin Shattenkirk

Montgomery appeared at a media gathering on Sunday sporting BU attired--apparently resulting from losing a bet on Friday's game--and spoke about the BU-Maine rivalry. He also dropped a bit of shade on Charlie Coyle, who left BU after a season and a half, and talked about the growth of McAvoy's game.

Terriers have now won nine of the last 10 meetings with Maine. The sole loss was the 8-1 blowout at Alfond Arena in the regular-season finale 2021-2022 season, which cost BU home ice in the conference tournament.  Full series history is on page 8 of the game notes for the weekend series.

Quinn Hutson followed up his five-point (4G,A) series against Lowell with a four-point (2G,2A) weekend against Maine. With seven goals, he's nearly halfway to last season's total of 15.

To the surprise of no one, Mathieu Caron was awarded the jacket on Saturday night by his teammates.

Colby Cohen, who was on Friday's NESN broadcast: "I thought Mathieu Caron was phenomenal for the Terriers this weekend. Made some huge saves and pivotal points of the game. Looks like he is setting into his new home at BU."

With 22 points (9G,13A), Macklin Celebrini is tied for first in Division 1 with Jared Wescott of LSSU. Blog contributor defkit points out that Wescott is seven years older than the Terrier freshman.

With 48 goals in 12 games, BU is fifth in D1 in team offense with a 4.0 GPG. Last season's team finished with a 3.9 GPG.

Plus/minus leaders: Tom Willander +9, Luke Tuch +8, Quinn Hutson +7, Macklin Celebrini +6, Aiden Celebrini +5

Looking back

On Saturday, McAvoy  got the Bruins going in the first period with his third goal. Coyle assisted on three goals as Boston defeated Montreal, 5-2.

On Sunday, Drew Commesso turned aside 22 shots to lead Rockford to a 3-1 win of Iowa in AHL action. It was Commesso's fourth win of the season.
