Media Day at Agganis; New Scoreboard; Looking ahead; Commesso meditates; Women win exhibition game

Thursday was Media Day at Agganis Arena with BU Athletics' imaging crew generating dramatic shots of the Terriers. Among them:

Looking ahead

2025 recruit John McNelis's scored the unassisted game-winning goal on a breakaway as Sioux Falls doubled up the NTDP U18s, 6-3, in the Stampede's opening game. The 5'10" left wing from Maryland had 38 points last season for Sioux Falls, earning second-team All-Rookie honors. 2025 recruit Conrad Fondrk had an assist for Team USA.  

 

2025 recruits and linemates Jack Pridham and Callum Hughes each scored a power-play goal—and assisted on the other’s tally—but West Kelowna gave up a late tying goal and then lost in overtime to Trail, 4-3.

 

2025 recruit Aidan Souligny scored the game-winner and added an assist in Prince George's opening-game 4-1 win Friday, earning the game’s #1 star. The 6’2” left-shot defenseman collected an assist in Saturday’s 3-2 overtime win against Chilliwack.

2026 recruit Jay Feldberg scored his second goal, short-handed, for the OJHL Junior Canadians in a 6-3 loss to Georgetown.

 


Bob McKenzie of TSN has issued his early rankings for the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. He slotted NTDP U18 defenseman Charlie Trethewey at #15. The 6'2" right-shot led all U17 defensemen in goals (12) and points (35) last season, including 10 points in the World U17 Challenge.

After seven seasons on the Bruins' blueline, Matt Grzelcyk signed a one-year $2.75 million contract with the Penguins where he'll play for Mike Sullivan, the father-in-law of his former defense partner, Charlie McAvoy, as well as David Quinn, who joined the Pittsburgh staff as assistant coach.

Women's Team

   

After spotting Concordia, a 1-0 lead, the Terriers scored four unanswered goals to claim a 4-1 exhibition game win over the defending Canadian national champions. 

Junior Luisa Welcke tied the scored early the second period and freshman Lola Reid put BU on top at 7:28 of the third period. Senior Christina Vote and junior transfer Riley Walsh added tallies to close out the scoring. 

Senior Callie Shanahan and sophomore Mari Pietersen split time between the posts with Shanahan making seven saves and Pietersen tallying 11.

BU will officially open its 2024-25 season on Tuesday, Oct. 1, when it hosts Merrimack.
