In USCHO’s Division 1 Pre-season Poll, Terriers are ranked third behind defending national champion Denver and BC, whom the Pioneers defeated in the title game. A pair of BU’s non-conference opponents, North Dakota and Michigan, were #5 and #7 respectively. Filling out the top ten are #4 Michigan State, #6 Minnesota, #8 Quinnipiac, #9 Cornell and #10 Wisconsin.

Other ranked BU opponents are conference rivals #12 Maine, #13 Providence, #14 UMass and #20 Northeastern, giving Hockey East six of the 20 ranked teams.

● GoTerriers.com report

College Hockey News' ranking of the Top 2024-25 Recruiting Classes has the Terriers third with Minnesota Duluth (11 recruits) and BC taking the top two spots.

3. Boston University

It’s a similar story across town as BU’s 2023-24 freshmen class will be one to remember, especially as Macklin Celebrini’s career continues to take off.

Replacing Celebrini won’t be easy after he became the youngest player to ever win the Hobey Baker Award. However, the Terriers added a pair of top prospects in Cole Eiserman and Cole Hutson to help ease the blow, along with Kamil Bednarik.

As for Eiserman specifically, the left-shot forward was the 20th overall pick (New York Islanders) in this summer’s NHL Draft and gives BU a constant threat in the offensive zone. Eiserman scored 127 goals over 119 career games, which is the most in NTDP history.

Four of BU’s seven freshmen are drafted while left-shot defenseman Sascha Boumedienne is draft-eligible in 2025 too.

►BU’s opening night opponent, Holy Cross, is ranked third in the 2024-25 Atlantic Hockey Preseason Coaches Poll. The Crusaders’ standout forward Liam McLinskey, who rang up 47 points (19G,28A) last season was named Preseason AHA Player of the Year. He and returning goalie Thomas Gale (2.41 GAA) earned spots on the Preseason All-AHA Team.

Looking ahead

2025 recruit Jack Murtagh scored twice to lead the NTDP U18s to a 5-2 win over Waterloo, giving Team USA a split of its two games in the USHL Fall Classic.

Murtagh, a 6’1” forward, sniped a shot from the left circle early in the second period that proved to be the game-winner. Later in the second, he redirected Charlie Trethewey’s shot from the right boards. Between those two tallies, fellow recruit Conrad Fondrk’s goalmouth pass set up another U18 goal.

● USA Hockey recap

2025 recruit John McNelis scored his second goal of the weekend as Sioux Falls rallied to edge Muskegon in overtime, 4-3. 2026 recruit Tynan Lawrence scored his first USHL goal for the Lumberjacks and added an assist while registering eight shots on goal.

Looking back

Macklin Celebrini, first overall pick in the 2024 draft, had a hand in both Sharks goals--scoring the first on a power-play, assisting on the second--but San Jose dropped its exhibition opener to Vegas, 4-2.

Luke Tuch, a 2nd round 2020 draft pick, opened the scoring for Montreal in its 5-0 blanking of the Flyers.

Lane Hutson, who assisted on Montreal's second tally, earned first-star honors, thanks to some moves familiar to Terrier fans.

After video of a 50-foot saucer pass by Hutson went viral, Ryan Whitney joined those predicting a great rookie season for Lane.

Joel Farabee scored a power-play goal and added three assists as the Flyer routed the Capitals, 6-2.
