This Day in BU Hockey: April 1--UPDATED

1995: Playing in their third national championship game of the 1990s, the Terriers defeated Maine, 6-2, in Providence for their fourth NCAA title. And, matching the achievement of the 1971-72 squad, BU completed a “hat trick,” winning the Beanpot, conference championship and national championship.

Despite a slow start in the first period, BU drew first blood with a man advantage when Steve Thornton controlled his own O-zone face-off and ripped a shot past Blair Allison. Chris O’Sullivan’s first of two goals doubled the lead early in the middle period and Jacques Joubert’s power-play tally stretched it to 3-0 before Maine got one back.

On a power play, the Black Bears closed to 3-2, just a minute into the third but that was as close as they would get. Jay Pandolfo intercepted a pass and sent Shawn Bates into the Maine zone where he found Mike Sylvia for the finish. O’Sullivan’s second, on a power-play, and a Bob Lachance short-hander produced the 6-2 final. Freshman Tom Noble, who led the nation in winning percentage (15-2-0, .882), made 21 saves while Allison stopped 33 Terrier shots. BU connected on three out of four power plays and killed seven of eight Maine power plays.

O’Sullivan, who earned second-team All-American honors along with Kai Linna, was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. Mike Grier, whose 29 goals tied with Joubert for the team lead, was named a first-team All-American.
