Today, College Hockey News
shines its birthday spotlight on Terrier captain and All-American center
John Danby. A Toronto native, Danby was a key offensive cog in BU’s
back-to-back national championships in 1971 and 1972, scoring 54 goals and 114
points in 57 games over the two seasons.
In his senior season, he was at his
best and most productive in tournament action. Danby claimed the Beanpot MVP,
scoring twice in each BU win. Then, in three ECAC tournament games his 8 points
(5G,3A, including a hat trick against Harvard in the semifinal) made him a
unanimous MVP selection. Danby added another hat trick in the Frozen Four
semifinal against Wisconsin.
Despite playing only 84
games in the no-freshman-eligibility era, he remains tied for #9 on the BU
all-time goal-scoring list with 79.
A Blackhawks draft pick,
he turned pro with the Whalers—rejoining Coach Jack Kelley—and scored 37 points
as the Whalers claimed the first WHA AVCO Cup championship. Following a six-year
pro career, he spent two seasons on BU Coach Jack Parker’s staff.
The Coronavirus prevented Hockey East from holding a
championship tournament, but the conference did conduct a fan-voted best goal
competition with BU sweeping the men’s and women’s divisions, both on tallies
by freshmen: Wilmer Skoog’s lacrosse goal against Dartmouth and Julia Nearis’s
steal, deke and score against Vermont. In the final competition between the
two, Skoog’s tally was the winner.
In the end, there could only be one!
Congratulations to Wilmer Skoog on being named the inaugural #HEPlaysOfTheYear Grand Champion for his lacrosse goal with @TerrierHockey.
