Flashback '70-'71; Women edge UNH

Flashback '70-'71: Dec. 5. BU 6 New Hampshire 1

Terriers continued to combine explosive offense and stingy defense to defeat New Hampshire and raise their record to 4-0-0. BU scored twice in each period. Junior wing Bob Gryp, who scored twice and added an assist to pace the attack, and John Danby provided a 2-0 first-period lead and BU never looked back. The other goal scorers were Don "Toot" Cahoon, Captain Steve Stirling, and Paul "Sweeper" Giandomenico. Danby and Bob Brown each added two helpers. Goalie Tim Regan turned in another efficient effort and sports a 0.67 GAA after three starts.

Gryp, who was one of four Terriers to reach 20 goals in '70-'71, was a key to BU's 40% power play, providing a screen for the blue line blasts from Brown and Ric Jordan and frequently converting tips and rebounds. After a 113-point BU career in three seasons, Gryp became the first BU skater to play in the NHL**, playing for Washington in 1974-75 and 1975-76 and totaling 24 points in 73 games. His daughter, Emily, was a four-year defenseman for Providence College.

** Goalie John Aiken played one game for Montreal in 1958. He was the emergency goalie pulled from the Boston Garden stands when the Canadiens' netminder was injured.

Looking ahead

2022 recruit Devin Kaplan scored a pair of first-period goals for the NTDP U17s but Team USA fell to NAHL Janesville in a shootout, 5-4. The right shot forward from Bridgewater, N.J. scored both times from just outside the crease with the second coming on a power play, assisted by fellow recruit Lane Hutson. Kaplan now has 11 points (4G 7A) in 11 games.

Women’s Team

Behind goals from senior captain Jess Compher and sophomore Julia Nearis, #8 Terriers opened their season Friday night with a 2-1 win against New Hampshire at the Whittemore Center in Durham. The teams meet again Saturday at 5 p.m. in Durham (Links).

Late in the opening period, Compher converted from the bottom of the right circle following passes from Mackenna Parker and Courtney Correia. BU doubled the score seven minutes into the second when Nearis controlled the puck at center ice, skated into the zone on a 2-on-1 and fired home a wrister from the left faceoff dot. Brooke Ersoy and Andi Calderone picked up the assists.

The Wildcats got on the board early in the third. Senior goalie Corrine Schroeder, who made several 5-bell saves, stopped a 3-on-1 midway through the period to keep BU on top. She finished with 18 saves.
